"New York" I breathed out, holding back my smile as my gaze rose and dark outlines of tall buildings spread across the cloudy, gray sky. It was a Friday in late August and the new school year was going to be starting the Monday coming up. A shiver ran down my back and I couldn't tell if it was from the slight wind or from the thought of going to a school where I wouldn't know anybody.
"Hey are you gonna help me unpack your sister's things, doofus?" My best friend since ninth grade, Natalie, shouted at my brother walking out of the dorm building towards us. She was struggling with a tote that held all of my clothes and books, and probably weighed at least 50 pounds.
Well, I guess I wouldn't be completely alone.
My older brother, Kayce strut past me and ruffled my hair as his way of saying 'Welcome to your new home.' I briefly caught a glimpse of him rolling his eyes as he approached Natalie struggling and nearly dropping my stuff.
"Get out of the way, ankle biter." He responded as he lightly shoulder checked her out of the way. As a 6'3 boy with nothing but muscle from playing as one of the tight ends for the university's football team, if he really wanted to shoulder check her, she would've flown at least three feet. With ease, he lifted the heavy tote like it was full of feathers and began carrying it back into the building, nodding his head towards the building to get me to follow him.
I quickly adjusted the baby blue backpack that was currently empty on my shoulder before jogging to catch up with his long strides. Sometimes it seemed like he forgot I was a whole foot shorter than him and had to double my pace to keep up.
"You wish I bit you. You'd probably be into it like the typical sack of hormones you are. Does anything else run in that brain of yours or just football and sex?" Natalie smugly responded as she decided to grab a much lighter cardboard box to carry.
I rolled my eyes, trying to fight the smirk pulling at my lips. For the last six years, ever since they've met, they have done nothing but bicker and tease one another. They probably have gotten into more fights than Kayce and I have our whole life, and he was my brother.
As we reached the elevator, we noticed a handful of students carrying their own trash bags, boxes and totes full of their own belongings while patiently waiting for the doors to open. Kayce turned his head over his shoulder and with the look on his face I knew he was about to say something to get one ahead of Natalie's remarks.
"Honestly, probably not. Sex and football help me with my endurance though. What about you?" And with that, he headed towards the stairs and began jogging up them with the heavy tote as if he was on a casual stroll. I peeked over my shoulder to see Natalie watching with a matching face of shock as I was doing the same. The shock turned into a small pout though and I laughed at her before interlocking her arm with mine and pulling her towards the stairs.
"Don't worry, you'll be able to successfully insult him again. Now let's try and catch up with our low endurances." I joked before we began to climb at a fast speed.
