HIT ME HARD AND SOFT is Billie Eilish's 3rd studio album, and I must say, we have some amazing things in store for this review. I must say, when listening to this album, HAVE BOTH HEADPHONES IN AT MAX VOLUME! It's such a real experience. This album MUST be Pop Album Of The Year. Forget about Beyonce and Taylor Swift!!!!
As of today, May 17th, 2024, this album has been released worldwide! This album gives so much emotion and I am LOVING IT! And this review is why I think you should love it too...
This album is Billie telling her love story. Or is it.. Lust story? With the lyrics, "It's a craving, not a crush." these lyrics give an insight as to how she's correcting herself and others. Is it love? Is it lust? Only she can be the one to define it.
Incredibly touching and intimate for her 3rd official studio album. The 22-year-old starts this album with a meaningful song, "SKINNY" featuring an orchestra finale. The breathy song truly catches people right in the feel as it discusses toxic beauty standards.
Sliding in with the next one, "LUNCH", a toe-tapping beat with good lyrics of a potential girl love-interest. Offering some suggestive lyrics such as "Need a seat? I'll volunteer?", "I could eat that girl for lunch.", "She dances on my tongue", and "Tastes like she might be the one." Will this air on the radio? I sure hope so, it is a catchy song!
Next, "CHIHIRO". The bass on this song is immaculate! The breathy tone of her voice hitting high notes is truly a beautiful sound. It switches up to a funk-like beat, followed by an electro sound. It seems like this song is about her having an experience with someone and not sure what to think about it.
"BIRDS OF A FEATHER" is our fourth track on this 10-song album. This song is about her basically asking someone to stay with her like birds of a feather. She wants the love to be forever, but she doesn't know what's in store for her, and she seems to be okay with that. "I'll love you till the day that I die." When she first sings these lines, it's like being hit with a beautiful feeling of joy.
Next up, "WILDFLOWER". I feel as though this song relates to Jesse Rutherford and his ex-girlfriend. She felt guilty for dating her friend's ex bc they were close. She wondered if he saw his ex in her eyes.
"THE GREATEST" is a song about her feeling betrayed by a love interest, saying that they only wanted her for "certain" reasons and that she did everything she could possibly do to make that person happy. She let that person come into her life and potentially mess things up over and over again. She just wanted compassion from the other person. So she sarcastically congratulates herself by saying, "Man, am I the greatest?" and thinks that that person could have been "the greatest" if they really showed her love back.
Song #7, "L'AMOUR DE MA VIE" is a song about Billie having warm feelings to her ex, many people think it's Jesse Rutherford. The two-part song first shows how she feels towards him right after they broke up, she discovers how she truly feels about it and experiences the anger she has when the ex-lover moves on so fast.
"THE DINER" is a bone-chilling song. It discusses her stalker. The song is told in the point-of-view of her stalker, and how he broke into her house. Last year, she had to file a restraining order against the man after he broke into her garden shirtless. At the end of the song, she whispered a phone number.. Fans tried calling it and it's just a recording of Billie saying "Hello?? Hello???" and she says she can't hear the caller and will call back.
"BITTERSUITE" Is a song about a long-distance relationship. With Billie being on tour constantly and traveling, she wasn't able to see her significant other nearly as often as she would've liked to. She only saw them in dreams. Being famous means travel. Travel means long distant relationships. And in my personal experience with long-distance, it is a VERY hard thing to deal with. It's draining mentally and emotionally.
And finally! "BLUE". This song is the emotional realization that she's not over her ex. As it's not an easy thing to accomplish. She brings up past songs from this album in this album-finale, she still hasn't processed what happened. She doesn't blame them or hate them, but she can't change or save them as she mentions in the song. She's still 'blue' over what happened. The song carries out with yet another beautiful and mesmerizing orchestra solo.
This album was an emotional rollercoaster! But it tells the story of how she goes through a breakup, and even in the end, still not one-hundred percent accepting it. This is such a relatable feeling, especially with who you thought was your "L'amour De Ta Vie". Overall, this album was a 10/10. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!
