EULALIE AUDREY VACKER—stood behind Dexter Alvin Dizznee as he rang the chimes at Havenfield, alerting the Ruewens and Sophie Elizabeth Foster to their arrival. They had arranged to meet her at Havenfield before school started so that Sophie wouldn't have to arrive at Foxfire alone.Sophie laughed as she let them inside. "And I thought my uniform was bad," she stated, directed at Dex.
Sophie and Eula were both wearing the girls' uniform—a blue pleated skirt with black leggings and a shirt-vest-cape combo. Dex, on the other hand, wore the boy's uniform—a blue lace-up jerkin over a black long-sleeved shirt, blue slacks with pockets at the ankles, and a waist-length cape that made him look like a really lame superhero.
"What's with the capes?" Sophie asked.
"I know, they're stupid, right? But they're a sign of status, so we have to wear them," Dex told her.
"You should see the full capes some of the nobility wear. Way too much bedazzlement for my taste," Eula stated, her expression twisting into a grimace at the memory of her mother's diamond-encrusted cape.
"Capes?" Sophie asked, bewildered.
"Yeah, haven't you noticed that only the nobility have them? Foxfire is the only noble school—meaning you have to go there in order to be in the nobility—so we wear half capes to demonstrate that. At least next year we get rid of the wimpy halcyon." Dex pulled on the blue, jeweled bird that clasped the cape against his neck. "We'll be mastodons."
