Back in Time (A Danganronpa Story)

Awakened

???: "Nae.."

???: "Naegi..?"

???: "Naegi..!"

I slowly woke up from the call of my name. I sit up, rubbing my tired eyes and yawning.

Makoto: "Sayaka..?"

I open my eyes to see Sayaka sitting by the side of my futon. She seemed to be scared or upset.

Makoto: "Is everything alright?"

Sayaka: "I.. I'm.."

Sayaka struggles to think of what to say. I begin to feel concerned. Is something wrong?

Sayaka: "I.. n-need to talk to you.. please.."

Sayaka finally tells me in a shaky and weak voice. She sounded on the verge of tears. I place my hand gently on her shoulder, reassuring her.

Makoto: "What's wrong..?"

Sayaka: "I-I've.. been thinking.. a lot about.. t-the video.."

Makoto: "Yeah..? What.. what exactly have you been thinking about it?"

Sayaka tensed as tears welped in her eyes. They were visible even in the dark.

Sayaka: "Please.. p-please don't hate me.."

I move my hand to her back, rubbing circles into it.

Makoto: "Sayaka.. there is nothing that would make me hate you.."

Sayaka hesitates for a minute before talking. Tears flowed down her face.

Sayaka: "I-I want to know.. Are they dead..? I have to know.. I-I have to know! It's all I've been thinking about..! Without my members, I'm.. nothing.."

She sobs, her hands gripping her clothed arms as she spiraled down into despair. I look at her with sadness.. I hate how much she's suffering.. she's one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and yet.. she was put into something like this.. breaking her.. I hug Sayaka as she cries into me.

Makoto: "I get it.. you want to see your friends again.. I want you to see my family again.. I know how you feel.. We can't let despair in Gulf us. We have to fight. Believe in hope. When I saw my video.. I felt the same things you're feeling right now.. but I believe that.. together.. with everyone else.. we'll make it out of here.. we'll save the people in danger. But we need to get through this first. Murder.. isn't the way to see your friends again.."

Sayaka wraps her arms around me, tightly clinging onto me as she sobs. She held onto me like her life depended on it.

I shift our position, so she lays on me. I hold her close to me, rubbing her back comfortingly, playing with her hair to try and calm her down.

After a while of soothing comfort and crying into my chest, Sayaka slowly unattaches herself from me, wiping her tears.

Sayaka: "Thank you.. Makoto.. I-I'm sorry for waking you up.."

Makoto: "Sayaka.. I don't care. You woke me up at all. I'm just glad that you felt comfortable telling me this." I say, giving Sayaka a comforting smile.

She gave me a small sad smile. She isn't forcing her doll smile like she always does. This was her showing her true emotions to me. Because she trusts me.

I looked up to the clock on the wall of my room to see what time it was. It was around 3:30 AM. Damn it's late..

Makoto: "Are you gonna be ok for the rest of the night?"

Sayaka: "I.. think so.." She says, her voice still shaky from the breakdown minutes before.

I smile at her as I help her get up. She lays back down on my bed and sighs. She looks bothered by something again..

Makoto: "You sure you'll be ok?"

Sayaka hesitantly sits up and fidles with her fingers.

Sayaka: "Could.. could you stay up with me..? Just.. till I fall asleep. I don't wanna sleep after that.."

I get it.. all of those thoughts she had might come back.. I smile as I sit at the end on my bed.

Makoto: "Of course! I'll always be here for you.."

Sayaka smiles softly as she shifts her position to sit next to me. We began to start small talk.. then we went into deep conversations.. and soon, we were laughing at awkward memories. We talked and talked for hours. I didn't realize how much time had passed until the morning announcement came on alerting us it was 7:00. We had been talking all night. Does.. this means that I saved her? Did I save Sayaka? Happiness overcomes me as I hear the words of Monokuma's annoying voice in the monitor.
