Lady Shorana Lilziat
Telmarison, 2313
How had her life turned out the way it had?
It was a question that frequently span in her head.
She was the third child and only daughter of a minor Lord and his wife, she was never supposed to be anything more than that and she was fine with that. Yet now? Nothing about that was normal for her. Her mother had trained her to be a good Lady and her mothers brother took her under his wing when his own children died from an illness which spread through Beruna with the intention of grooming her to take over the family vaults. It wasn't much in it, but her family took pride in their little wealth, especially considering they had started from nothing.
In two generations the Lilziat's and the Derenson's (her mothers family) had became Lord's. Solely because her great-grandfather had saved King Caspian VIII's life after being set upon by brigands. He hadn't asked for much, just for some stability for his family and nothing more. Instead, he'd been gifted a title and a castle which was more a holdfast than anything, and her father was taken to ward with who would later be King Caspian IX and his brother.
Now, one more generation on, she was going to be Queen Consort to a King she had long believed to only have been a myth told to children. Shorana still recalled when her father had come home wide-eyed the day it was confirmed that Narnian's very much did still live and that they were gathering a revolt under the current King who at the time was only the Crown Prince. She'd been confused, as were her two older brothers Feron and Pertyn. Her brothers immediately enlisting with the Royal Army to defend what was theirs. Eleven years. That was how long had passed since then.
She often wondered what her brothers would think of her now. Would they be disgusted with her or proud of how far she had come? Would they look at her the same or look at her like she was a stranger who just so happened to have a familiar face? What would her mother think of her? Her father she didn't care much for. Shorana would always miss him, yet he did actively help Miraz usurp his nephew and that was something that was unforgiveable. Due to him doing so and her brothers being loyal to her father, they had both died too fighting for something they should be against.
At least neither of the King's or the High Queen brought it up. There was no recognition on a battlefield, they all knew there was a possibility that it was at least one of them to land the killing blow. Something she would always be grateful for. They didn't know about her, they didn't know what would happen to her, and they certainly didn't know there would be a betrothal agreed only a few months later without her consent. She remembered that day well, when her uncle had pulled her aside in his large house in Beruna where she was staying in the initial upheaval.
To say she had been disgusted was an understatement. Not over the fact she was betrothed because that was something she had long known would happen. Yet she had expected to have had some say in the matter. It was what her mother would've wanted for her yet her mother had died two years before to a burst belly. At that point she was the sole inheritor to both her mothers family and her fathers family. In the span of a matter of days she lost her entire family bar one uncle, cast aside by those around her over what her father had done, become incredibly rich, and was being told she was going to marry one of the Narnian King's one day.
It had been a lot.
Too much in too little time. It showed too. The first time she had been taken to Telmarison she had not met the royals as they were in back to back meetings to work on rearranging everything. In fact, she didn't even so much as see any of them until being there for ten days and even then only saw the younger Queen getting to know the layout of Telmarison. Two weeks it took before she was summoned by her intended directly to discuss matters in person, and such a meeting did not go well.
