. . .

I opened my eyes slightly as I heard a soft noise. Directing my ears towards it, my eyes widened realizing what it was.

Shadow had begun purring beside me, and most probably completely unaware of it! I felt my heart grow warm and my face become slightly flushed. As much as he would hate if he heard it himself, he was adorable.

Finally content with my night, I shut my eyes and let the forces of sleep drag me away.

. . .

I fluttered my eyes open to the smell of freshly baked goods. Sniffing a couple of times, I tried to determine what it was, but wasn't able to focus properly. Sitting up, I rubbed my eyes and looked beside me.

The bed was empty where Shadow should have been, and a few red and black quills lay on the pillow he had slept on.

I guess he moves around a lot in his sleep.

I chuckled softly sitting up from my bed and walking towards my closet. I threw on a baggy One Ok Rock t-shirt and walked out the door. As I made my way down the stairs, I heard the sound of sizzling on a pan. My mouth began to water as a familiar smell entered my nose.

Pancakes.

I made it down the stairs and was greeted by Shadow with his back turned toward me as he was hovering over the stove. He held the handle of a small metal pan and shuffled it back and forth.

I could feel my face heat up slightly as I noticed his appearance. He had his quills tied up into a high ponytail and wore a baggy brown shirt with gray sweatpants. I watched as he lifted a cooked pancake off the pan with a spatula and flipped it onto a nice, tall stack beside him.

"Since when do you cook, Shads?" I asked, sitting on a tall chair over the countertop. I leaned my head in my hands and watched him expectantly. Turning around, the ebony flicked an ear as he brought the stack of pancakes to the table.

"It's a hobby I picked up a few months ago." He responded, "Do you have any jam or syrup?"

"Oh, yeah!" I said sitting up, walking towards my fridge. Opening the door, I grabbed a jar of strawberry jam and set it on the counter. Walking back, I reached into my cabinet and took a bottle of honey, setting it next to the jam.

I sat back in my chair and watched as Shadow took a seat beside me. He grabbed a pancake from the stack and set it on his plate, pouring syrup over it.

"Wow, Shads! This is really good!" I said, taking a bite out of the pancakes. I saw a small gleam in his eyes as he registered my complement.

"Really?" He asked. "I've only made them once or twice, I didn't think they'd be that good." He said, looking down to his plate and at the pancake.

"Yeah! Is it your recipe?" I asked, noticing Shadow's little tail wag. He quickly composed himself, clearing his throat before speaking.

"No.. it's actually Rouge's recipe." He mumbled, taking another bite of the syrup soaked pancake. I nodded in response and put another piece in my mouth.

I watched as Shadow stared at a calendar hung on the wall of the kitchen. His ears perked up as he read the tiny, jotted notes in one of the boxes.

"Your birthday is next week?" He asked, taking a glance at me.

"Oh! Yeah, I forgot to mention that." I shrugged, pushing the plate in front of me aside. "I might have everyone over, do you wanna come?"

"Hm.. I may be able to.." Shadow answered, looking downwards. "I don't think the commander has anything important for me to complete that week."

"Awesome!" I beamed, standing up from my chair. "I was actually considering just celebrating by myself with Tails, Knuckles and Amy, but maybe a bigger party will be nice."

Shadow nodded in response and glanced at my plate. "Are you not gonna finish your pancakes?" He asked, ears drooping a bit.

"I'm not really hungry anymore," I lied, "I can eat the rest later though!" I added, reassuring him that his pancakes wouldn't go to waste. His ears unconsciously lifted up again and he finished the last of his food. Standing up, he took his plate to the sink and rinsed it before placing it down.

He walked over to a tall bookshelf in my living room and grazed over the different titles. "You have this book?" He asked, pulling out a red-gray covered book.

"Oh, yeah! It's alright, do you wanna read it?" I asked, observing the gleam in his eye.

"Yes.. I've been meaning to read it, but never had the time." He responded, letting himself fall onto the cushion of my dark brown couch. He crossed his legs and opened the book, his tail wagging unconsciously.

I chuckled quietly and walked towards the stairs. "I'll be right back!" I said. After hearing a quiet 'okay' I made my way up and walked towards the bathroom.

I looked at myself in the mirror and leaned with my hands on the sink.

I shouldn't have eaten so much..

I looked down at my figure and frowned. I had gained weight, the customers at the restaurant were right. Sighing heavily, I walked out of the bathroom and to my room. Shutting the door behind me, I went to my closet and grabbed a large hoodie so I could hide inside of it whenever I wanted.

I should stop eating so much..

Walking out of my room, I made my way down the stairs to be greeted by Shadow calmly asleep on my couch. Giggling to myself, I sat beside him and observed his features. His head rested on one of his hands and he held his book in the other.

You weren't kidding when you said you never get decent sleep.

I felt my face become warm as I listened to his quiet breaths. Without thinking, I brought my hand to his forehead and rubbed small circles into his fur. My heart skipped a beat the moment loud purrs emit from the ebony's chest. With every exhale there was a deep rumble.

Continuing the gesture for about a minute, I smiled as Shadow turned his face and nuzzled it into my hand. I moved my hand from his forehead to his cheek and continued to trace small circles.

The ebony's purrs grew louder and a small but visible smile grew on his muzzle, but it only lasted a moment. One of his ears flicked and his eyes fluttered open. He stared at me with half lidded eyes before he pulled away suddenly.

"What are you doing!?" He asked, his face turning a light shade of red. "I'm not a cat!"

"You purr like one.." I teased, watching as he widened his eyes in shock.

"I beg your p-pardon?" He stuttered, his face turning a deeper shade of red than before. I chuckled loudly at his embarrassment and leaned on the back of the couch, enjoying the time I was able to spend with Shadow.
