Sonic bent down to pick a small bud of lavender, holding it up to the ebony. "this one kinda reminds me of you!"
"Is that so?" Shadow chuckled. "And why is that?"
"Well..." Sonic murmured, examining the bud up close.
"It's put together, tall... and it has a sense of calmness to it, even though you can't see it right away." Sonic locked eyes with Shadow, making his face grow warm.
"It reminds me of you because.." Sonic started, walking forward a little bit. "at first, you seem more closed off, serious, and cocky,"
Shadow watched as the azure placed the bud into the others hand, closing his palm over it. "but your loving to the ones you care about under it all."
. . .
Shadow was at a loss for words. When he had asked Sonic "why," he didn't expect a serious answer. He expected something stupid or corny. But this. This was most definitely not what he had expected.
He would be lying if he said that Sonic's words didn't hit him deep, not only were the words kind and caring - but they were genuine and real. It made Shadow feel warm. Warm and fuzzy. It was an amazing feeling, but it also filled the ebony with nervousness.
Although he would never admit it aloud, things like relationships made Shadow queasy and unsure. They could never be anticipated or planned for. He recalled the events of last night. The kiss they shared, the tears shed, the tight embraces. It all felt so good, but it also came with never ending "what if's."
Shadow knew deep down in his heart that he was in love, but he couldn't seem to grasp the concept all too well. Everything felt so complicated and difficult, but it was also worth it if it meant he could spend time with the one he cared for most.
Yeah, he didn't understand love. But he figured nobody could really understand it until they experienced it. And that's exactly what happened.

Shadow leaned his back against a wide tree, one of his ears twitching as Sonic joined him. The two had spent the entire day together; dusk began to fall, painting the sky a light purple. Stars began to emerge from hiding, slipping past the veils of twilight and twinkling slightly.
Sonic leaned back, hands behind his head. He had enjoyed his night with Shadow, it helped him unwind from everything that had been going on lately.
"Thank you, by the way." He started, catching Shadow's attention. He looked at the azure with questioning eyes.
"For all of this I mean." Sonic said, making a motion with his hand. "Spending time with me and all of that. I really needed it."
"Mm." Was the only thing that came out of the ebony's mouth. A small smirk formed on his muzzle as he looked at the ground below him.
"I'm glad I could be of help." Shadow answered. His words were simple but genuine. Sonic had gone through a lot these past few days, and although he was the others rival - he would be lying if he said he didn't care about the azure.
"Oh yeah, one question..." Sonic said quietly, which was out of character for him.
"Is it okay if I crash at your place tonight.. I don't really want to go home right now."
The last thing Sonic needed was to go home. His father was there, probably filling his son's small house with the smell of smoke and cursing as he blew up Sonic's phone.
Shadow thought for a moment, his silence making the other grow anxious. Nonetheless, he nodded his head.
"I'll allow it." He said in a monotone voice, although there was no real annoyance behind it. Shadow understood that Sonic needed somewhere safe - and he was willing to do whatever it took to keep him that way.

Sonic skidded to a stop as followed Shadow to a decently sized home. He had never been to the shorter hedgehog's home - actually, he couldn't recall anybody going due to how well hidden it was.
"Rouge is on a mission right now," Shadow said, placing a hand on the doorknob. "she shouldn't be home for another two days." Turning the handle, he opened the door and motioned for Sonic to come inside.
Right... I forgot they lived together. Sonic thought as he stepped inside and onto the floor mat.
Rouge and Shadow had always had this weird sibling dynamic that was never really spoken out loud. It only became evident to Sonic a while ago when Rouge had squeezed a water bottle directly into Shadow's face. The look she received could kill. The two bickered and tussled for a bit; curses and empty insults being thrown left and right. The thought made Sonic chuckle.
Stepping inside, the azure instantly felt the presence of comfort and safety.
