Aurora's pov"Hi?" I hear a little squeaky voice of what I'd say was an eleven year old speak.
The boy looks over at Kent. "Adam!" He runs over and hugs him as tightly as possible, as if he thinks if he lets go he would disappear.
Obviously, the little boy had questions as to why there are three adults and another child in their home, so Adam explains it all.
"-buddy I'm really happy you're taking this so wel, I am James, really. But this isn't something to be excited about. We are running for our lives here." Adam says, trying to not make it sound too aggressive.
James did actually take it quite well, which is surprising for a ten year old. The thought of him maybe knowing about things worse sickens me.
James smiles widely. "But we're doing it together."
That's the fifth time he's said that. He grew fond of Kenji almost immediately which is surprising, since he looks like a beautiful, beaten up zombie. And now the pair of them are trying to convince Adam that James can help.
Did I just think he was a beautiful beaten up zombie?
"And I can help." James pushes.
"No it's not—"
"Of course you can."
Kenji and Adam say at the say time. Kenji continues, unbothered.
"Why can't he help? I think ten years is old enough, he's double digits!"
"That is not your call to make." Adam says, his patience is definitely thinning.
"I'll finally get to come with you." James says quietly. "And I want to help."
Adam hesitates for a second then looks at Kenji. "How far?"
"By foot? At least a few hours." He pauses. "And if we don't do anything stupid then we should be there by nightfall."
"What about a car?" I ask.
"Well shit gorgeous why didn't you say anything sooner?" Kenji exclaims, a grin taking over his entire face.
"Watch your mouth around him." Adam says and nods to James.
James scoffs then rolls his eyes, "I hear worse stuff than that everyday, even Benny uses bad words."
"Benny?" Adam eyes widen.
"Yup." James says, unbothered.
"Well what does she—" he pauses. "You know what nevermind, that doesn't mean it's okay for you to keep hearing it."
"What do you want him to just turn off his ears every time he thinks someone is gonna swear?"
I say, this dude is really getting on my nerves.Adam huffs.
"I'm almost eleven!"
Kenji bends down to meet James's eye level. "Hey little man, it's okay, it's my fault. I should be more careful, besides there are ladies present." He looks up at me and smirks.
I roll my eyes, but huff out a laugh at his antics.
Kenji gets back up. "So what? You stole a car?"
"Tank." Adam says.
"Wha— NICE!" Kenji gasps in disbelief.
"Isn't that a bit conspicuous though?" I inquire, I'm really not in the mood to get caught.
"What does conspicuous mean?" James asks.
"It means too noticeable." Junie says.
Everyone around me except for Junie stops and stares at her.
"What? He didn't know so I answered." She shrugs.
I smile and lean down to whisper. "They're just shocked because you're really smart."
She pauses and then grins, "I know."
"and very humble." I mumble to myself. Kenji hears it though and chuckles.
I stop suddenly, getting this awfully bad feeling in my stomach.
"Shit." Kenji and I say in unison, we look at eachother. This bad feeling growing stronger every second.
"I told you to watch your mouth in front of—"
"You hear that right?" I say to not anyone in particular.
"Hear what-?" Juliette's small voice speaks up.
Kenji scans the room. "Is there another way out of here?"
Adam shoots up from his seat. "JAMES—"
James runs to his brother side. I motion for Junie to come to me as I'm trying to get most of the bags on my shoulders. The others doing the same.
"QUICKLY GUYS."
"How close do you think—?"
"NO TIME, THERE. IS. NO. TIME."
"KENT RUN—" Kenji screams as the bad feeling inside me grows immensely stronger.
We're up and running, with Junie in my arms and a few too many bags on my back.
Adam runs into James's room, and reveals a hidden door behind a curtain. We hear three beeping noises from the living room. Adam shoots the lock and busts opens the door.
Not even ten seconds later something explodes behind us. My God, too much is happening right now. My body almost topples over from impact. I try to cover Junie's ears with one of my hands on her ear and pressing her against my chest. Gunshots are piercing my eardrums, James gets hauled up by Adam and we're off running to anywhere.
The sudden blast of light blinds my eyes. The roads are coated with water and mud, due to the previous rain. My vision is slightly blurry and all I see is small dots of colours running around screaming and crying. I soon realise that these colours are the children that also live in these homes, and that they're screaming because of us.
Well so much for being unnoticeable.
I can't believe they've already found us and it's hasn't even been two days. My thoughts circle back to my brother, who is probably so angry at me he would kill me and everyone I know. Or my father, who would probably kill us both and then the entire population of sector 45.
