And so, the classes start once more.

We were waiting for Sir Conner, once again. It was stupid boring, I was basically just drawing in my math notebook even though I knew my mom was gonna kill me once she found out.

So just make sure she never finds out.

I saw Jayre out of the corner of my eye and he seemed... off. He was being extra smiley, more... carefree? Who would have thought carefree Jayre looked so-

Never mind. I shouldn't even be thinking of Jayre in the first place.

So why do you do it so often?

Just then, Sir Conner entered our classroom with some papers. "Good morning class, today we won't have a discussion," he says and half the class cheered before he silenced us. "But, I will be disclosing who will be paired with who on our retreat!" he smiles.

Oh, the retreat. I completely forgot about that, wait. What day was it again? I look at my watch to check the date.

'May 9.'

Oh, the retreat was already tomorrow. Damn. Time flew. I wonder if I'm gonna be paired with someone I actually know. They said the reason of the assigned pairs was for safety, I'll probably get assigned with a girl then.

Suddenly, Jayre starts humming an upbeat tone of a song I didn't really know. What a weirdo. But then again, he was... a rather attractive weirdo.

Where'd that come from?

"Jayre, come on, cut it out." I grunt. Why does everything Jayre does get on my nerves? "Why are you so happy right now even?" I ask, I was genuinely curious. Who the hell is happy in the mornings?

"Nothing, just excited for who I'm gonna get paired with." he hums and I roll my eyes and listen to the names Sir Conner was saying.

"Ezra Lory, paired with Reign Hudson..."

"Haylee Layla Cover paired with..." my ears perked with the sound of my name as I listened intently.

"Jayre Loren Johnson." Sir Conner smiles before putting down his paper on his desk. "Alright class, this is your free time, do what you please."

What? I was paired with... JAYRE?

Quickly, I stood up and walked to Sir Conner's desk. I needed to do something about this.

"Uhm, Sir Conner... can I have any other person to be assigned with?" I ask, "I mean- I thought that I would maybe be paired with another girl?"

"Ah yes, well... we can make some exceptions. You and Mr. Johnson don't have any stuff going on between the two of you, correct?" he asks with raised eyebrows and I pout. I barely pout unless the situation is big. The situation is getting very big right now!

"Exceptions? But from what I heard, no other girl was paired with a boy in this class." I challenge, please just let me enjoy this one thing, let me have a break!

Sir Conner sighs before folding his arms on the desk. "Sorry kiddo, but no can do."

Please!

After class, I was particularly fuming. Why? Well, I just didn't wanna deal with Jayre's teasing and whatever while on the retreat. It was a retreat for crying out loud! It didn't even start yet I'm already stressed as hell about it.

"Layla, something wrong?" a sneering voice comes from behind and I don't even need to look to know who it is.

"What do you want, Johnson." I drawl, I wasn't in the mood.

"Thought I asked you to call me Jayre now." he laughs and I seriously wanna slap him.

Nah, too risky. Too many witnesses.

"Well, it's really up to me wether I wanna call you that." I deadpan. Which makes Jayre chuckle. Like, not the teasing laughs and stuff, but actually chuckle. It was genuine, light, and... I felt like this would be the type of Jayre i'd like.

Woah woah woah! I think we strayed way too far from the subject, we were talking about Jayre's chuckle. Not how you would like him! I mentally scream at myself for even thinking that.

"Why so mad Layla?" he asks with an innocent facade and I roll my eyes.

"You. Being paired with you, to be precise." I huff. How did this even happen!

"How so? A lot of girls would be screaming with joy if they were paired with me." he smirks, smugly.

"False. I know plenty of girls that despise you, wether it be because of your cockiness, arrogance, or whatever." I tut.

"Whatever you say, Layla. I'll see you on the bus tomorrow!" he winks which makes my left eye twitch, like literally twitch.

Oh gods.
