I walked through the halls on Monday, with annoyance. Then as I reached my locker, Jayre of course made his way to me.
"Morning Layla, as promised." he held out his hand that had his jersey. I looked at him before reaching out to get it.
"Uhm... thanks Johnson, so are you really inviting me to your game?" I couldn't help but make sure. He flashed me a crooked smile.
"Of course I am, better wear that jersey though." he smirked and I rolled my eyes. He turned around to leave I suppose but he stops and turns his head at me. "Oh and Layla, you can start calling me Jayre now." he winks before striding away.
For some reason I couldn't help but blush while staring down at the shirt. Just then, a hand lands on my shoulder and I whirl around to see one of my best friends, Zander, Zander Alex Leonardo. And an instant thought came to me. You didn't have to wear only one number... and Zander was also on the basketball team.
"Hey Zander, you're playing today right?" I ask and he nods, now beaming.
"Are you gonna watch?" he asks and I smile.
"What's your number on the team?"
"33."
"Great. See you at the game." I smile and his cheeks go a bit red.
"S-see you." he stammers before I walk away.
Finding myself in the bathroom getting ready while wearing a basketball player's jersey was literally not even on my bucket list.
But look where I am now.
"Oh, Marissa, can you hand me the lipstick?" I ask and she hands me it with a confused look.
"I couldn't help but wonder why you're gonna support that cocky jerk today at the game." she sighs and I shake my head, she hated Jayre as much as I did.
"Mom and DJ made me do it, but I am also there to support Zander." I wink and she raises her eyebrows with a smirk and I laugh.
"Supportive best friend hmm?" she wiggles her eyebrows before she burst into a fit of giggles, me soon following after her.
"He is attractive though." says Marissa and I nod before writing the number 3 on both of my cheeks to make the number '33' for Zander.
"Does the jersey look okay?" I ask and Marissa nods. I still couldn't believe I was wearing JAYRE's jersey which was actually pretty comfy was colored red so it wasn't totally ugly. Though the downside was pretty bad. The downside was that I had the number 7 with the last name 'Johnson' beneath it on my back. Plus, showing up to a basketball game was just gonna be awkward. I knew nothing about basketball!
"You ready?" Marissa asks and I nod before we make our way to the stadium.
Woah.
The stadium was huge but not many people were there yet, except for the players.
And then he saw me.
He stared for a bit before making his way to where all the people sat. We were in the very front. Lucky us.
"Hey Layla, you doing good? You're wearing the wrong number on your face." he says with sarcasm and a bit of something else that I couldn't really guess. Was it jealousy? No. No, Jayre wouldn't get jealous for me.
"Actually, a friend of mine plays on the team, thought i'd give them a bit of support too." I state.
His eyes flicker down at what I was wearing, well, basically just looking at his own jersey.
"Looks good on you Layla. You should make a habit of wearing it." he smirks, winking before going back to his team, leaving me stunned. What the hell?
I always knew Jayre was a flirt, just common fact, but this is just strange now. He was never this flirty back then! Well maybe because we were literally just kids back then. I look back to the team and see Zander looking at me with a weird expression, it had a hint of awe but I wasn't sure what else.
Marissa looks at me with wide eyes and open mouth. I understand her confusion though, I mean, I'm pretty confused right now too. But maybe when the game starts i'll calm down a little and start to think a bit more clearly.
