"Atlas must be crazy! He wants to reject you for your sister?! You're his mate for goddess sake!" Elaine's litany after I told her everything that happened.
After running away from Atlas and our home, I decided to come to Elaine's house like I always do. Not that I have other places to go though.
"And he dared call himself an Alpha? An Alpha who defies the divine order from the Moon Goddess? He's making her angry by denying the mate she chose for him." She continued angrily.
"More like the mate I chose, Elaine." I interjected. "The Moon Goddess must've got tired of me praying for Atlas to be my mate so she allowed it to happen. I know he wasn't supposed to be mine." I smiled bitterly, "Things will be a lot easier if he is."
My friend shakes his head at my words but I know it's true. I've been a very good girl ever since I was a kid so that the Moon Goddess will like me and favor my pleas. I know how pure her heart is. I heard stories about her, all the old tales, where she's willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of her people. I know she can't say no to me. I know she can't afford to hurt my feelings so she chose to give me what I want even if it's temporary.
"My perception about how things work never change, Liliana." Said my friend, interrupting my thoughts. She went to her window where the moon can be clearly seen and looked at it with what seemed to be sadness in her eyes.
"The Moon Goddess has her reasons. She will not pair you with someone just because you prayed for him countless of times. If that's the case, then she should have..." she shakes her head and closes her window. "Nevermind. This day has been so stressful for you. You need to rest." She said while walking towards me.
I nod at her words and let myself rest in the comforts of her bed. I yawned. I didn't know I was tired from all the running.
"Good night, Lili," she said. "Good night, Laine" I answered, before letting myself succumb in my sleep.
Eight years ago...
"Lana, Lani, gripped on your seats tightly." My dad said as I felt our car speeding up.
My heart suddenly races and I know that something is wrong.
"Dad, Mom, what's wrong?" Liliani asked them as she tried to grab my hand to stop me from panicking.
Mom looks behind us while dad is too focused on his driving. I felt the car go through an uneven surface and I squeal in shock.
"I'm sorry baby. Daddy will try to be extra careful. Just stay in your seat and calm down, okay." Daddy said with sweetness in his voice.
My mind immediately felt at peace with his words. If daddy says everything will be alright, then everything will be alright.
Just when my mind is starting to calm down, I suddenly felt something that bumps our car from behind causing it to shake again.
Mom looked at Dad in fear and I felt the car speeding up again. I felt a hard squeeze in my hand and I looked at Liliani who is now looking at our back.
I turned my gaze towards the direction where she's looking and I felt my eyes grow bigger in fear as I saw ragged wolves tailing behind us with red eyes and mouth watering with their saliva.
"Rouges." Liliani said, causing me to panic. I heard about them from my kindergarten classmates before. They are feral. Untamed. Dangerous.
"Don't mind them. They will stop chasing us as soon as we are near the border." Mommy said with evident fear in his voice no matter how hard she tried to mask them with a smile on her face.
I felt my eyes tearing up. This is my fault. If I didn't ask them to buy me a dress for my birthday this month then we would not be in this dangerous situation.
My mom saw my tears and she reached out to Liliani and I's intertwined hands while holding the back of daddy 's seat to steady herself.
"Don't cry, honey. Everything will be alright." She said before I felt something hit our car from the front.
It was my mom's assuring smile that I saw before everything blackout.
