Theo laid the brown book on the table before him. Its title was Heaven, Hell, and.. the last word being so worn out it was unreadable. The whole book was battered and dirty, being clearly old and having seen some things. As for what was in the book, Theo had no idea. He had bought it on impulse—which he had a terrible habit of doing— from a pawn shop after finding out it was found outside of a burned down church.
Theo, being a priest, figured he would look into it. Why not, he figured.
He glanced over at his Bible which was laying on the other side of the table. His heart was beating abnormally fast, but he shrugged it off as anticipation.
He opened the book carefully, not wanting to damage the frail pages.
Behind the cover was a blank page, and then another four after that one. It wasn't until he had turned the page five times that he saw any words.
Though he wasn't sure "words" was the right description.
It was just.. gibberish. It was handwritten and was covered in letters, but none of them made a word.
Many of the "words" had common English letter combinations like "th", "qu", "gh", and "st". They all seemed to be normal words if you replaced multiple letters with random other ones.
"What.." Theo whispered to himself.
He turned another page, then another. They were all filled with the same lack of words. He eventually turned to the middle, but still found nothing.
Theo couldn't help but think that it was some kind of trick. A puzzle, maybe.
And he wanted to figure it out.
He attempted to pronounce the first word on the page, then tried again when nothing clicked.
He continued to try, and fail, to say the words until the table shook.
At first Theo thought he may have nudged it. Why else would the table move?
But then it kept shaking.
In a matter of seconds the table was violently trembling, making the quiet room erupt in sound.
His Bible and the brown book fell to the floor, followed by a pen and an unlit candle he had on the table.
Theo practically broke his leg trying to stand up from his chair. He hit his shin hard enough on the leg of it to leave a nasty bruise and his ankle caught around it, making him fall to the floor.
He hissed in pain, his ankle bent at an awkward angle while still wrapped around the chair.
The table stopped shaking, but Theo hardly realized. His heart rate was through the roof and his mind was going so wild that for a minute he had forgotten all about the abnormal table.
He pulled his leg to his chest and rolled up his pants to inspect his leg. Luckily nothing was broken, maybe just twisted a little. His shin sent electric shocks up his leg when he touched it, and he could already see purple starting to appear.
It wasn't until the floor creaked that Theo looked back at the table.
And, honestly, he wished he hadn't.
Rather than seeing his small table and his chair he saw a large figure standing where they used to be.
The figure was dressed in all black and wore silver jewelry, having multiple rings and numerous ear piercing.
What it was dressed in didn't concern Theo in the slightest, though.
He was, however, concerned about how its skin was completely pitch black, as were its eyes. Its nails were long and such dark grey they almost appeared black as well, only a few shades lighter than its skin.
Theo felt like he could puke at any moment. His stomach turned and he stopped breathing for a moment as he stared dumbfounded at the creature.
"I.." Theo stuttered, but his voice faltered.
The creature crouched down, getting closer to Theo.
Theo backed up as best he could, practically crawling on the floor.
"A human?" It spoke, it's voice deep and a bit dry.
Theo was at a loss for words. His mind had blanked and he was simply staring back at the creature with wide eyes.
"Is this Earth?" It asked, its inflection seeming calm, nothing more than curious.
Theo failed to respond. He continued to back up until he hit the wall and, to his horror, was still only a few feet from whatever it was that's in his home.
It's eyebrows furrowed and it leaned forward. For the first time Theo noticed it's long hair, reaching to his mid to lower back.
"Back up" Theo finally managed to demand. His voice was filled with fear and he was sure it showed on his face too, but he still did his best to seem unafraid.
The thing only continued to stare, it's mouth opening a bit in confusion.
Theo reached over to the bookshelf beside him. On the second shelf up laid a wooden cross that he grabbed and hold of and held before him as intimidatingly as he could.
"Back up" he repeated.
