Val had a look of disbelief on his face. Whether if was confusion, or anger, or shock, Theo didn't know. And at the time, he didn't really care either.Val took a noticeable deep breath. He shut his eyes for a moment and he rolled his shoulders.
"I wish you wouldn't call us that" he finally spoke, his voice surprisingly calm and composed.
Theo was a bit surprised, but he stood his ground.
"Creatures?" He almost mocked. "Isn't that was demons are?"
Theo internally cursed himself for being so standoffish with his words. It wasn't like him to get into arguments like this, and it certainly wasn't like him to be so petty about it.
It wasn't like him to be in association with demons either though, so he allowed himself to have a bit of an excuse.
"I could say a whole lot about humans too, priests especially, but I'm not, am I?" Val argued back, but his voice remained calm.
"Priests?" Theo laughed sarcastically, "priests teach the word of God"
"God" Val repeated, saying it as if the word burned his tongue.
"Yes, God" Theo finalized.
Val looked like he wanted to say something. He looked like it was eating away at him, but he stayed silent.
Theo turned away from the demon and began walking out of the church, back into his house.
He didn't take more than five steps before Val spoke up again.
"Those books you got, the ones that made you believe all those things about demons. They're wrong" he spoke as if he was pleading for Theo to believe him.
Theo stopped dead in his tracks, turning slowly to face the demon once more.
"I never told you I got more books about demons" he mumbled, half to himself.
"You're not a good liar.. or good at keeping secrets" Val chuckled only slightly before the room fell serious again.
"Just listen to me for a second, okay?" He asked quietly.
Val took a step towards Theo. Theo didn't take a step back.
"I told you about the war between humans and demons. I told you how humans erased the war from their history. That seems like reason enough for you to believe those books are wrong, considering I told you about the war before you got them."
As Val explained his voice grew sincere and he got a look in his eyes that Theo couldn't quiet describe. But something about it all was so convincing. Something about it made Theo feel bad about his words and actions.
He got a small sense of deja vu, building his trust for the demon all over again.
"And you know I didn't lie about not being able to leave" Val took two more steps towards Theo, leaving them only a few feet apart.
"I've been here for over a week, Theo, and I haven't done anything to harm you" Val continued to explain himself and all of his actions, his voice slowly getting quieter and quieter.
He took another two steps towards Theo.
The two stood mere inches apart. Theo had to tilt his head to look up at the demon and, though it was irrelevant at the moment, he realized how neat his hair looked. It appeared freshly washed, as it had since the day he arrived, and it was clear he had worked through it with the comb Theo gave him.
"Val.." Theo tried to speak, but it all came out as air.
"I don't know how I can convince you that I'm not here to hurt you. I really don't. But I am begging you to make this easier on the both of us and just believe me" Val locked onto Theo's eyes.
