The service went better than Theo expected. That being said, it was still below average—Theo's voice was quivering the whole time and he struggled to keep his mind on track with the lesson— but it was acceptable. And so when it was done everyone talked a bit as they slowly filed out of the church.
Everyone had been there that morning, the entire congregation joining together.
The experience, though it wasn't different from any other normal Sunday, made Theo particularly happy. It put him in a lighter mood.
When it was over and Theo was back in his house, his mood instantly shifted. He could feel his face drop as he looked over at the basement.
Surely the demon had woken up by now. Surely he had realized that Theo locked him in there. And he was surely upset about it.
And so, slowly, Theo approached the door. He grabbed the key. He put it in the lock and turned it quietly. And he creaked the door open.
The demon was stood at the bottom of the stairs. His arms were crossed, his posture was stiff, and his eyes—his pure black eyes—were locked onto the priest who stood at the top of the stairs.
"Shouldn't you be with your church?" Val declared, his voice low and angry.
"Everyone has left. The service is over" Theo explained just loud enough for Val to hear, his eyes locking onto the floor.
He wasn't sure why he felt bad for trapping the lying, rude, suspicious, demon in the basement, but he did.
"What?" The demon half-whispered, his voice having an odd inflection.
When Theo looked back up at Val, his expression was.. different.
His eyes were wide, but Theo couldn't pick out the emotion that was causing it. His eyebrows were furrowed with what Theo could only assume was confusion.
Val uncrossed his arms and took a few slow steps up the stairs, Theo taking a few steps away from the door in turn.
"The service ended. Everyone has left and gone home" Theo explained once more.
Val's face became even more contorted.
Theo couldn't form any more words before the demon had rushed up the stairs. He was halfway to the door that led to the church before Theo snapped out of his shock and followed behind the demon.
"What on earth are you doing?" Theo griped, meeting the demon at the closed door.
His panic gave him enough courage to get near the demon, but it would be a lie to say Theo wasn't absolutely terrified.
Val was jiggling the handle aggressively, desperately trying to get it open.
"Open this door" he demanded.
Theo wanted to refuse, but was struck with fear as soon as he met the eyes on the demon who was standing only inches away.
And so wordlessly, he pulled the key out of his pocket and unlocked the door.
It didn't take long for Theo to regret his decision. The front door of the church wasn't locked nor were any of the windows.
It was too late though.
Val rushed into the room, looking around frantically for a moment before making his way to the front door.
That was where he stopped though. His back was turned to Theo as he appeared to turn the door handle, but the door didn't budge.
Theo wasn't sure what he was doing. Matter of fact, he was certain he was making a bad choice. But regardless of all those thoughts, he began making his way over to the front door to join the demon.
