Kathy mulls over everything as she looks at all the pretty dresses in the store. Sure, Marty is cute to look at but he isn't someone she wants to date. With how her sister was acting she thought she would want to go to the dance with him. But Marty is like a best friend she didn't know she needed, she's comfortable around him. Yet she didn't like him, at least not how Lorraine wanted her too.
"Blue's your color." a voice makes her jump in surprise. She turns and sees George McFly standing there, holding a couple of bow ties and regular ties in his hands.
"George! You startled me." she greets him with a light laugh a hand on her chest.
He gives her a sheepish smile. "Didn't mean to do that to you Kathryn, sorry." he says, looking away in embarrassment.
"It's alright. I was lost in my own head, my own fault." She pauses before pulling out the dress she was staring at. "You think it'll suit me?" she asks, holding the dark blue dress with sheer top edge against herself. It wasn't all too puffy, simple with an off the shoulder design, flowing down a little past her knees.
George swallows as he stares at her. "Anything would suit you." he says before blushing, "I-I mean, yes that dress would definitely work for you Kathryn."
She smiles and tilts her head, "Why do you call me that?" she asks curiously.
"W-well it's your name." he replies with a nervous laugh.
"Yeah, but everyone has a nickname to give me. Usually just Kathy works, but you call me Kathryn." she says, lowering the dress as they talk.
"Well, I think Kathryn's a beautiful name. And it compliments you." he tells her, his eyes full of sincerity.
Her eyes widen slightly as a blush goes across her cheeks. 'Did he just call me beautiful?' she thinks to herself. "Oh..." was all she was able to say in awe.
"D-do you want me to call you Kathy?" George questions, becoming nervous with her gaze on him.
"No! No.. uh, I quite like it when you call me Kathryn." she admits, getting shy and looking away.
This time George's eyes widened, "Alright, Kathryn it is." he tells her with a crooked smile.
Kathy finds it in herself to look at him again, glancing at the accessories in his hands. "Are you getting a tie for the dance?" she asks him.
"Huh?" he says before glancing down, "Oh, yes. Uh, I just don't know what color... or style." he admits sheepishly.
"Let me help." she offers, Setting the dress back on the rack and grabbing the ties. "Hmm." she thinks, holding each one up to him. Unknowingly making him nervous as he clocks in just how close she stepped to him. "I think one of these would work." she says holding up a dark blue bow tie and a black normal tie. "I think the bow tie is cooler than a normal tie, but it's up to you. I hope this helps."
He slowly grabs the ties and nods. "A great help. Thank you." he says already knowing which of the two he would be getting now.
"I better get going. But, hey if we see each other at the dance, save me a dance?" Kathy says to him as she grabs the dress he helped her pick.
"Yeah, sure." He agrees, with a nod as she smiles at him and walks away. "Anything for you Kathryn." he mumbles to himself as he watches her leave. He sighs before everything that just happened hit him. He just had a conversation with Kathryn, and no one got in their way. "I gotta talk to Marty." he says before rushing away with the bow tie in hand.
Now, Marty hears George recount everything that had just happened on the other part of the store with blinking confusion. They seem to be able to just talk so casually to one another. "Wait, she wants you to save her a dance?" he clarifies and George nods. "See, I told you buddy. She likes you."
George sighs all dreamily, "Maybe she does." He was giving into the fantasy that Marty had been giving to him now. "What if we don't do your plan? What if I just dance with her?"
"No. Her sister's the stubborn one. She said she wants someone who is strong and will defend her. You do that, you win them both over, and Kathy and you will live happily ever after." Marty explains simply; although he wishes they could just do what George suggested.
"Kathryn." he corrects.
"Huh?" Marty was confused.
"She likes to be called Kathryn." George clarifies.
Marty's wheels turned as he looks at his dad "Is that what you two talked about?" he asks slowly, the story of how they fell in love replaying in his head from the morning he left.
'He took your mother to the enchantment under the sea dance.' his aunt Lorraine says with a sigh as she stares at her sister and George sitting next to one another at the table next to Marty.
'Not the story again' his sister complains.
'Tell us Kat.' Lorraine says, making her sister look up from her book, giving the three infront of her a shy smile.
'He was the only person in school who called me Kathyrn. I asked him at the dance why that was and he said it was because it was a beautiful name and that it suited me well.' she says before looking at George. 'That was when I fell in love with him.'
George looks away from the tv and turns to face her, grabbing her hand in his. 'I love you.' he says, giving her his crooked smile.
'Gross.' His sister says with a scoff, before his Aunt lightly smacks her arm.
'It's adorable.' she corrects, before looking at Marty. 'Find a girl who falls for words not actions.' she scolds, referring to Jennifer.
Marty sighs, glancing at his parents who went back to their normal routine, George watching tv and Kathryn reading a book, but now holding hands.
"You know, you're pretty good with your words when you aren't overthinking it. I bet she's already fallen in love with you." Marty says in a teasing tone seeing as his plan, albeit a bit out of order, was working.
George's face flushed red, "Y-yeah right."
