People show only the best on social media. I am not judging, and although I do not have the actual study to back up my claim, you will for sure agree with me in one way or another.
I am also not saying that posting only the best that you have is wrong. This is not a lecture about being sensitive to others who are not as fortunate as to what you can afford. Neither is this a speech reprimanding one to show off what they have worked hard for and enjoy.
Instead, this is actually to encourage everyone to enjoy as much as we can. Yes, set aside an emergency fund - that is necessary. Invest in medical and life insurance - those are unquestionably helpful. But do we put everything we earn for an uncertain future?
Some social media posts I often see are captioned "I deserve this" after buying that long coveted pair of shoes, or luxury bag, or that trip to Boracay, or as simple as eating out with family or friends in your favorite hot pot and barbecue bar and restaurant. Surely we do deserve these blessings. But why do we sound regretful when we say "I deserve this"? Is it because we spent that much on unusual shopping? Because we could have saved the money for something greater in the future?
If we have the capacity to enjoy the little things, let us enjoy them fully and truly, without regret. After you settle your obligations - your bills, groceries, personal debts - go buy and complete that book series you love. Subscribe to that movie streaming platform you so much take delight in. Get that massage after a stressful week at work or household chores. Book that vacation you so longed for. Splurge yourself on the aesthetic clothing you want on.
It is always a good thing to have savings. However, do we forget to live at the moment simply because we are saving everything for the future? What if we do not exist in the future we are so worried about? Enjoy the little things - much more the big ones. You deserve it
