Twinkleheart was falling from the sky, desperately trying to flap her wings at the same time while screaming. She didn't think that the portal would have her fall down who knows how long it was from the sky to the ground, she thought that she would be underwater and by the time she resurface she would be in a new world. But nope, this portal had other ideas instead. Not even clouds were able to catch her from falling as she descended too fast.
Her mind was going places, but focused on one event that came into her mind: the week before her flight test as a teen. It was a test to determine whether she was a true pegasus that deserved to live in Equestria, or be banished forever, knowing that she would be shunned by every pegasi. Of the tests that were included, one of them was the recovery portion, as you would have to fall and recover before landing in the cloud to safely catch you. Twinkleheart practiced with two of her fellow pegasus friends: Arcadelle Stream and Quivil Red. The three of them were perfect for one portion of the test; Quivil was good at clearing the skies, Twinkkeheart with flying through the hoops, and Arcadelle with falling and recovery. After Twinkleheart's 7th attempt at failing to recover, landing on the cloud with a thud, Twinkleheart groaned in frustration.
"You were close!" Arcadelle cheered, despite Twinkleheart not even close to catching herself from falling.
Twinkleheart sighed. "Thanks, Arcadelle. But, you realize there's no room for error, right? One mistake and it's over for me."
"Well, it doesn't mean that you're still trying," Quivil agreed with Arcadelle, in a soft tone. "I think it has to do with your reaction. You're still flapping as if you're drowning in water, never knowing how to swim."
"Well, how did you two do it?" Twinkleheart asked, receiving water from Quivil, before adding, "and no, I dont think reading a book would help. I already know the mechanics in flying."
Quivil looked away sheepishly, as to hide the fact that she did read a lot of books to perfect hers, but Arcadelle looked at Twinkleheart. "To be honest, I just dont think about it."
Twinkleheart looked surprised at Arcadelle. "You winged it?"
"Yeah, basically. Clear your mind of whats going on around you, and focus on the sounds and your breath. A freaked-out pony will make irrational decisions, but not when you've calmed down and believe."
Arcadelle's voice echoed Twinkleheart's mind in the midst of her panicking. Using Arcadelle's voice as her guide, she closed her eyes and focused on her quick breathing despite her being close to the ground. Slowly but surely, her breath slowed, and soon enough Twinkleheart concentrated on getting her wings to open up simultaneously.
"One," Twinkleheart muttered. "Two. Three!"
She immediately opened her wings, and instead of the harsh winds beating down on her, it calmed down to a breeze. Opening her eyes, she was gliding across a grassy area, mere feet away from touching down. Relieved, she landed on the soft grass with both four hooves, and looked around. For some reason, it was just an area full of grass, but in the distance, trees to what seems like a forest.
"The Everfree Forest?" Twinkleheart asked to herself. "But, this can-"
All of a sudden, a portal opened up, in the distance. She couldn't see clearly, but it looked like the world had a tiny distort, before spitting out something - or someone - before closing it up.
"Dont tell me-" Twinkleheart started, before galloping towards that, not finishing her sentence.
As she galloped, she could make out some sort of a creature. It didn't seem to look at Twinkleheart, just her brown mane facing towards her as it surveyed the area, murmuring something that she couldn't hear. Bracing, she slowly walked up to the creature, poking one of its shoulder. The creature screamed as it turned towards her, causing Twinkleheart to also scream. The two locked eyes, and continued to scream.
"Who are you?!?" They both shouted at the same time.
"You first!" They said at the same time again.
"No, you!" They said, thrice.
"For one thing, I know you're trying to trick me!" Twinkleheart said as she separated her legs, as if she was about to fight.
"Trick you?" The creature asked. "Didn't you bring me here?"
"Ye- wait, what?" Twinkleheart was still in her fighting stance, but tilted her head in confusion. "I dont even know this place?"
"But I do," a new voice menacingly chimed.
Suddenly, black smoke surrounded the two. Twinkleheart wasn't phased, but guarded over the creature as the smoke revealed to have four legs, but it wasn't standing on all fours. It was standing on two instead, similar to the other one with the jacket. It was more of a black goo shaped to be a body, As it speaks, its mouth opened to where Twinkleheart could see the trees through it, and it didn't have eyes.
"This place," it started. "Is a place where the locals call it 'Altus'. Why? I dunno. But what makes it interesting is that only I am able to enter and leave this place. So I'm glad that both of you are here." It grinned upon finishing.
"So you're Vienna?" The creature with the jacket asked curiously. "You're the one that wrote to me in-"
"Yes," Vienna said, grinning. "That way, I can finally end these years of my own suffering, and finally have a chance to reset time!"
"That was your goal all this time?" Twinkleheart hollered. "Why not the other ponies that were killed in Equestria?!"
"Those ponies were nothing to me!" Vienna shouted angrily. "I needed to regain power to barely achieve my own form, and to do so I needed the negative energy from you lot. And had it not been for you, I could've achieved my final form. But at the same time, it was enough for me to have this. Enough so I can do this!"
Vienna shot through Twinkleheart, attempting to slash the creature, but instead missed as it jumped away from Vienna. Twinkleheart used this to her advantage, landing a blow on Vienna's back.
Vienna grunted. "Of course you wouldn't give up your life so easily, and of course my powers are weak." It said, under their breath.
"I made it my goal to make sure you would never see the light of day again," Twinkleheart responded. "And i'll make sure you'll stay dead!"
Vienna chuckled. "Try me. Until then, good luck getting out of this world!"
In an instant, Vienna disappears as Twinkleheart tried to lunge at her, landing on the grass again.
"Come back here you fool!" Twinkleheart spat at the sky.
As Twinkleheart pounded on the ground, she hear the creature speak, and turned to her, in which she was now also standing on two legs.
"You know Vienna?" She asked.
Twinkleheart turned to her, her anger diminishing. "It's been a long story, but i've been tracking her down for quite a while. Nice dodge by the way."
"Thanks..." the creature replies. "But, I have no idea how I did that. Usually I have a bad reaction time."
"Then, maybe you're somehow special here?" Twinkleheart asked. "Maybe... this is fate of-"
"A hero's journey?"
"Yes!"
"But I don't know, i'm not cut to be a 'main character'. I'm just an outsider of many people's lives. I don't even have a friend in college."
"Well, maybe I can be your friend?"
The creature thought for a second before replying back. "Honestly, we might need each other in this new world, so let's take down Vienna, together!"
Twinkleheart smiled at that response. "I like your attitude!" She then extends a hoof in front of the creature, introducing herself. "My name's Twinkleheart. What's yours?"
"Flare. Flare Kittens", she said, and shook with Twinkleheart's hoof.
