Wei Wuxian felt a tug at his collar and looked back to see the donkey trying to pull him and make him move. He could choose to go or not go. Since the donkey went as far as to pull him, he decided to follow it. It took him in a certain direction and stopped and circled a patch of grass. Wei Wuxian observed the grass and found a qiankun pouch lying on it. He picked up the qiankun pouch that fell on the grass and opened the pouch. There were a few things in it like medicinal liquor, talismans, a small demon-reflecting mirror, and so on.
He pulled out a talisman and immediately it ignited with flames. It is a talisman that automatically starts burning when it comes in contact with dark energy. The more energy there is the stronger the flame. Since the talisman burned as soon as it was taken out, he guessed that there must be a spirit nearby.
Wei Wuxian held the talisman in different directions to see where the spirit was. When he turned to the west, the flame grew stronger. He walked a few steps and saw a figure under the tree. It was an old man dressed in rich clothes. Wei Wuxian was perplexed at first but decided to approach the figure. As he neared the old man, Wei Wuxian heard the man murmuring something to himself. He quickly realized that the old man was not a person but a spirit.
"It hurts! It hurts!"
Wei Wuxian didn't know what to do but chose to give it a try and asked the man, "Where does it hurt?"
"My head. It hurts!" The old man replied.
"Let me take a look." He said and took a clear look at the old man's head. There was a large hole on the side of his head. Wei Wuxian concluded that the injury might probably be the reason why he died.
What confused Wei Wuxian was that these types of ghosts shouldn't appear on Dafan Mountain. He contemplated for a while as he observed the old man's attire which seemed quite expensive.
At last, he came to the conclusion that these low-level spirits were attracted by a spirit-attraction flag held by some cultivator to attract the prey. But it only attracted a bunch of dark ghosts. If it attracted any stronger prey like in Mo village, it would be hard to handle.
He only hoped that his dear nephew wouldn't encounter any of those types of stronger prey that could put the kid in danger especially since the kid seemed like he was searching for the prey alone without any friends or his fellow disciples.
He hopped on his donkey and rode in the direction that Jin Ling had gone before. When he didn't see any trace of Jin Ling, he asked a few cultivators who were nearby that area.
"Excuse me! Where did the young masters from the Jin clan and the Lan clan go?"
Maybe because he no longer looked like a hanged ghost, the cultivators acknowledged him and answered him saying that they went to the goddess temple.
"Goddess temple?" Wei Wuxian asked.
Just then, the rural clan that he had seen before came up the mountain again after hearing that the deity-binding nets were destroyed. The girl who gave the apple to him came forward pointed in a direction and spoke. "Over there. It's a temple in a cave on the mountain."
"Which deity is the temple built for?" He inquired again.
The girl replied, "It's a natural stone statue of a goddess."
Wei Wuxian thanked her and ran in that direction.
However, this goddess temple felt suspicious to him. He thought back to all the things that he heard till now.
The first man that had a grand wedding, lightning that destroyed the coffins. After that A-Yan's fiance, A-Yan, and her father lost their souls. Then the old man in his rich burial clothes. And finally the goddess temple. To him, all these incidents seem connected like a string. No wonder neither the compass of evil nor the spirit-attraction flags worked.
