Helen, Bob, and Lucius exited the car that had brought them to DevTech, a sleek and imposing building high above the city. The driver handed each of them a security badge.
"Your security badges. Please, this way."
Bob and Helen moved forward, but the driver stopped Lucius.
"Hey, listen, you're my biggest fan... I mean, I'm your biggest fan..."
"Good to see you," Lucius greeted, offering a polite smile as he walked away.
"Shoot!" the driver muttered, disappointed.
The trio rode the elevator up to a lavish room that overlooked the city. As the doors opened, a man's enthusiastic voice filled the space.
"I love Superheroes!" he exclaimed. Winston Deavor, a tall man with an energetic demeanor, descended a grand staircase. "The powers, the costumes, the mythic struggles. Winston Deavor. You can call me Win. Genuine pleasure to meet you all."
He shook Lucius's hand first. "Frozone! Good to see you."
Then he turned to Helen, shaking her hand as well. "Elastigirl."
"Nice to meet you," she replied warmly.
"Mr. Incredible!" Winston exclaimed, turning to Bob.
"Hello," Bob responded with a smile.
"Incredible, Incredible..." Winston sang, and Bob joined in with a chuckle.
"Incredible! Catching the bad guys, pow, pow, pow!"
Winston then shifted his attention back to Lucius. "Who's the cat, who's always chill when surviving odds, is close to nil. Frozone, Frozone..."
"Frozone!" Lucius finished with a grin.
Behind them, a woman entered, juggling multiple items and trying to hand them to someone at the door.
"Can't tell you what a thrill this is. And this..." Winston gestured to the woman who had just arrived, "...is my tardy sister, Evelyn."
Evelyn had short brown hair and blue eyes and was dressed casually in a white sweater and jeans. She smiled apologetically. "Oh, hello, there, superheroes. I'm so sorry I'm late."
"And I'm scolding myself so you don't have to, Winston," she added playfully.
"Spectacular," Winston said, gesturing to a painting on the wall. The painting depicted an older man with a proud expression.
"My father was so proud that I was even remotely connected to you guys. He used to call you the Last Line of Defense. He was your top supporter."
Winston gazed at the painting with admiration. "He donated to superhero causes. He raised money for the Dynaguy statue in Avery Park. He got to know many Supers personally. Even installed a phone with direct lines to Gazerbeam and Fironic in case of emergencies. He loved that, showed it off to everyone."
His expression grew somber. "He was heartbroken when you were all forced to go underground."
Evelyn stepped forward, her tone matching her brother's sadness. "Father believed the world would become more dangerous without you."
Winston continued, his voice heavy with emotion. "He didn't know how right he was. There was a break-in. My father called Gazerbeam on the direct line. No answer. He called Fironic. No answer."
The room fell silent, the weight of Winston's story settling over the group.
.
"Superheroes had just been made illegal. The robbers discovered him on the phone and shot him," Winston explained, his voice heavy with emotion.
