❝ I don't know what any of us would do without you ❞

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

When Cleo woke up that morning she just knew that it was going to be a terrible day.

Minho and Alby were not back yet. And it was raining.

(It never rained.)

Newt tried his hardest to sooth her worries but eventually realized that it was worthless. She was too deep in her own head to listen to his comforting words.

Cleo kept asking herself questions about the future as if Minho and Alby were already dead. Who would be the next leader? Newt, their second in command? Who would be the Keep of the Runners? If Minho was dead she knew that she couldn't stand by and watch everything fall apart. She would have to take charge and become the Keeper of the Runners again. Maybe she wouldn't have the guts to go back into the maze but she knew it by heart so she could easily plan everything.

It would never be as efficient as before but she could make it work. She would make it work.

"What if they don't make it back in time?" Thomas asked. He was not aware of the fact that his blunt question was only making Cleo feel more nauseous.

Newt gave him a sharp glare from the corner of his eye. "They'll make it."

"What if they don't?"

"They will." Newt snapped back, his accent growing thicker due to the annoyance in his voice.

All of the gladers were rounded up next to the hammocks despite the fact that it was not sundown yet. They gathered all of their things and put them in the med-shack so they would not get ruined. After that, they hid under the only roof that could cover all of them.

Cleo, Newt and Thomas stood on the edge of the crowd. Raindrops constantly fell on Cleo's face because the roof was barely covering her but she did not seem too bothered by it. She was in a trance-like state.

"Cleo!"

Gally's urgent yell fell deaf to her ears. She did not hear the sound of him repetitively calling her name until he reached her and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Cleo." His voice was softer that time, but it snapped her out of her trance.

"Yeah?" Cleo cleared her throat once she heard how weak it sounded. "What is it?"

"They need you in the med-shack." Gally said, looking across her face to try and look for any emotion other than pure fear. "But I'm sure that they can manage──"

Cleo rapidly shook her head. "No. I can go. I need a distraction."

Gally was not so sure that she should be taking care of someone's broken leg while so distracted but she was smart and stubborn. She could handle it.
