Time: Present Day
Location: Sydney, Australia.

Once she had Mal safely inside her 4th floor apartment Layla said, "Now can I offer you a drink?"

"A double scotch would be good, single malt even better," he said drying his eyes with a tissue she'd given him.

"No scotch I'm afraid. I do have something I think you'll like though."

"I'm sure you do!" Mal said feeling bold. "I. . . er . . . didn't mean that the way it came out," Mal blushed.

"Oh, didn't you, pity," Layla flashed him her most seductive smile, "don't worry I'm just fucking with you. Here, I know you love liquorice, it's a liquorice liqueur, called Black Magic, one sip and your anybody's."

"I'd rather be yours," Mal forced out, it was now or never! He'd never have a more opportune time to tell her how he really felt. He threw the offered shot of Black Magic down, as much to avoid her eyes as to take the drink. When he brought his head back down and returned his gaze to the front he was met by sparkling green, blue eyes not six inches from his face. Layla took his face in her soft delicate hands and began kissing him full on the lips. Carter was in the corner watching all this. He followed them into the bedroom, the same room where he too had made love to her the first time.

He felt betrayed, and yet a little relieved. He realised after a few minutes where this was heading. His cord was pulsating but not green, no, it was flashing fiery red and yellow and orange. He was aroused, emotionally at least. He floated towards the bed as the clothes all fell around them. Mal wasn't experienced, not like him, he decided to move behind Mal, to connect his cord again like Teacher had shown him at the racetrack. He had decided to do this as much to experience sex again with Layla as to help Mal out with his technique. Mal lasted only a few minutes. He began to apologise, "I'm so sorry," he said, "I'm not like Carter. I guess I've been dreaming of this so long I couldn't control myself . . .I . . . "

"Shush you, as far as I'm concerned it's a compliment. I don't care how good you think Carter was in bed, he's gone now, and you are twice the man he was. You would never have done to Carter what he did to you. I'm not saying that I didn't love Carter, I did. I think you know me well enough to know, that I wouldn't have slept with him at all, unless there was something there. But we all need to move on, and I know it might sound strange Mal, but I've always loved you too. I just thought you weren't interested in me, in that way. Boy was I wrong, and, before you begin comparing yourself with Carter, it took me four months before I slept with Carter. I am sleeping with you on our first date, aren't I!" she laughed.

Mal grabbed her, buried his face in her breasts and said "Layla I love you. I've always loved you. You were my first love, I hope you'll be my last."

"You're not planning on dying on me too are you? Not after this, "She hugged him to her and sighed, "What on earth are we supposed to do now?"

"How about we try again?" Mal said with a grin as he lifted his head and kissed her.

She broke away for an instant, "Mal, you realise that Amanda and Monique can never know, not yet anyway, they wouldn't understand, and I don't want to spoil their memory of Carter."

"Yeah I know, they thought the world of him, so did I, despite his shortcomings. Yes we'll keep it our little secret. It might even be fun in a way, like a clandestine affair. You can be my bit on the side," Mal joked.

"I don't mind a bit on the side actually," Layla mused.

"Come over here then," said Mal. They both giggled like lovesick teenagers.

Carter was torn with emotion. I can't be here, he thought, and he wasn't.

Carter ended up back in the theatre. He looked to his left and found Teacher there smiling back at him. Teacher broke the silence, "Now you are about to learn about, what you on earth call, Karma."

"I know what Karma is?" Carter said.

"You don't know the half of it Carter Cheval, I can't wait till you do however. It should be quite amusing. In the meantime, if I can use that expression without your derision, I urge you to watch the movie Carter Cheval. You have had a taste of Karma already, it is a taste I advise that you control, otherwise you are likely a cannibal, a cannibal who is in danger of eating himself.

"What the fuck are you on about?" Carter said angrily.

"Ah, I see you are upset, Karma is a bitch, Carter Cheval. You are about to learn an important lesson, a lesson necessary for your advancement, soon you will learn your real purpose. Soon you will comprehend your place in the All, the place you have occupied from the beginning. Watch the movie, it is not your movie, yet it is, it is not from your world, yet it is. You say you know about Karma, you do not. You do not yet know that Karma is the thread that holds the universe together. It is the umbilical cord between Good and Evil, between Light and Dark, between Love and Hate, between Ecstasy and Desolation, between Mal and You. Learn Carter Cheval, learn your place in the All, you are needed sooner than you think."

Carter's mind was reeling, his emotions were raw, he looked up at the screen and his jaw dropped. "I don't believe it!" he said at last. "Believe it Carter Cheval, for it is your destiny."
