TESSA LOCKWOOD POV
Time stands still, and I grapple with the need to protect my past. Grandpa breaks the silence, "Ah, that's a lovely family photo, isn't it?"
I offer a weak smile, trying to divert attention. "Yes, it brings back cherished memories."
Clyde, seemingly content with that, shifts the conversation. "I thought you are the only child, who is that?" Woo! Seems like he hasn't recognized Emily. Great. I guess it's because the pictures are from our teenage years, with Emily at 13 and me at 17.
"Growing up, I had this incredible friend named Emma," I begin, introducing another name to the mix. "She was like a sister to me, always there during the good and tough times. Unfortunately, she moved away, and we lost touch over the years."
Clyde listens attentively, his curiosity evident. Grandpa nods, seemingly accepting the story. I feel a mix of relief and guilt, knowing that this fabricated tale shields the real connection between Emily and me.

The morning sun gently paints the room with warm hues as Clyde peacefully sleeps beside me. Grandpa, sensing the quietude of the early hours, joins me in the kitchen. The fragrant aroma of brewing coffee permeates the air, creating a comforting backdrop for our conversation.
Grandpa's concerned gaze meets mine, and without uttering a word, I can sense the worry etched in the lines of his face.
As I pour two cups of coffee, Grandpa places a gentle hand on mine. "Tessa, my child, love is a powerful force. I've seen the way Clyde looks at you, and I believe he's a changed man. He loves you deeply, and I can't bear to see you carry the weight of revenge at the expense of your own happiness."
His words resonate, and a vulnerability washes over me. "I just want justice for Emily, Grandpa. I want those who hurt her to pay for their actions."
He sighs, a mixture of empathy and paternal concern. "Consider this, Tessa. What if there's more to Emily's story than what we know? What if her death wasn't a result of intentional harm? Clyde loves you genuinely, and perhaps it's time to seek the truth, to unravel the mystery surrounding Emily's passing."
As Clyde joins us for breakfast, Grandpa's eyes twinkle with a mischievous glint. He suggests, "Why don't you two take a break from the city life and visit our family ranch? It's a peaceful place, and I'm sure you'll enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle."
Clyde's eyes light up with excitement. "A ranch? That sounds amazing! I've never been on a horse before."
I chuckle, "Well, it seems we have a city boy in need of some ranch adventures. What do you think, Clyde?"
He grins, "I'm up for it! A day away from the city sounds perfect, and riding a horse sounds like quite the experience."
Grandpa, pleased with our enthusiasm, adds, "It's settled then. You both can use some fresh air and open spaces. Take the day, enjoy the ranch, and maybe you'll discover a new side to each other."
****************
The sprawling landscape of the family ranch stretches before us, a canvas of vibrant greenery and endless blue skies. Clyde and I stand near the stables, surrounded by the comforting sounds of neighing horses and the soft rustle of leaves.
Clyde, dressed in a pair of jeans and a casual shirt, looks both excited and slightly unsure as he eyes the majestic horses nearby. I can't help but smile, ready to share the joy of riding with him.
"Alright, Clyde, meet Midnight," I say, leading him towards a gentle and well-mannered horse. "She's a sweetheart, and I'll be right here with you every step of the way."
