THICK COATS OF SNOW FALL OVER PANEM. It's all over, but it's not the kind of snow children play in. It's the type of snow that is stained in crimson blood.
It's the type of blood that still stains until fifty-nine years later. The 15th and the unheard of 10th Hunger Games are long in the past. It's so long ago that hardly anyone is expected to remember their events.
After all, the 74th is starting. No one could believe what happened in the reaping. It's a unique Hunger Games for sure.
A girl volunteered herself for her younger sister. She wasn't a Career from the wealthier districts, but a 'normal' girl from the poorest district of them all. District 12.
And surely District 4 has only had one victor that stands out since the 15th games. Finnick Odair, the youngest ever victor won the 65th games.
President Coriolanus Snow hated him, but he was a favorite of the Capitol. He used a trident, which a girl a long time ago used.
A girl named Pearl Bazin.
The beautiful white pearl fresh from the waters of District 4. She was all anyone would talk about for the longest time, until she belonged to Snow. Then everyone was afraid to go near her.
Then one day, she disappeared. There was another victor who dissapeared before that from District 12, but no one can seem to remember her name.
As the volunteered tribute walks into the Capitol, Snow feels it all coming back to him. They say her name is Katniss Everdeen.
She reminds Snow of the girl from 12. Lucy Gray. The one he loved first. But then the cut from even more recently begins to sting. Lucy Gray might be dead, but he knows deep down that Pearl is probably alive.
It was like Katniss was sent from them beyond the graves and the districts. She encapsulates their personalities and looks, and even her name reminds Snow of his loves that he once knew.
In another life, they would have been something.
And in another side of Panem, Pearl still lives. She's older now, but she had found a place. She's still living by the water, but she doesn't exactly have the same strength she had all of those years ago.
She knew if they found her, Snow would force her to be his again and they would punish her likely with another round of the games.
There's peace by the water, and peace with the rebels she found living beyond. News travels through Panem like rushing water.
There's a new girl that seems like she has a spark. They say her name is Katniss. Pearl sits watching the waves, and reaches for her necklace.
