"It's finally here!" Joy exclaimed, bursting into Sadness' room. "It's the day!"

"Hooray?" Sadness mumbled into her pillow.

Joy gave a knowing smile, gently pulling down the blanket. "Come on, Sadness. It's our birthday!"

"Happy birthday then..." Sadness said.

"Happy birthday to you as well," Joy giggled. "And of course, can't forget about Riley."

It all had to do with timing. The day Riley had been born, Joy and Sadness had been the first two emotions to manifest, with the others showing up those next few months. Technically this meant that not only was it Riley's twelfth birthday, but Joy and Sadness' as well. Usually they did something for Joy (because she was naturally more likely between the pair to do something to celebrate), and they usually did try to include Sadness, but especially this year (considering they were only a few months off from exactly one year since that whole moving incident), she wanted to do something just for Sadness. She'd even convinced the others to make a big deal for Sadness today.

What Joy didn't realize, though, was that Sadness had her own plans up her sleeve for Joy, so that she could prove to the positive emotion that their friendship had definitely been improving these last seven months.

"Come on, silly," she began trying to pull Sadness out of bed. "We've got three birthdays and I don't want us to miss any one of them!"

Disgust was the first person to talk to Sadness when she came down, but she lowered her voice. "Everyone says they're coming and Fear's already gotten confirmation on the delivery."

To the average person (or even Joy), this would make no sense, but Sadness, knowing exactly what her fellow emotion was talking about, simply grinned and gave a thumbs up.

"Guys, isn't this going to be a great day?" Joy said, bouncing around the emotions.

"Yeah," Anger said, biting back his snicker since he knew exactly what kind of confusion they were about to cause for her. "It's Sadness' big day."

"Yup!" Fear agreed.

Anger did notice it. Joy's smile faltered just that tiny bit.

"You sure that's all that is?" she asked.

"Yup," he said. "Don't think there's anything else going on."

She pursed her lips together a little bit. "Are you entirely sure?"

He nodded. "Hey Sadness, do you have any ideas for what you wanna do today?"

"Actually, no," Sadness shrugged. "My first thought was just helping Riley get through the day."

"Come on, it's your special day," Disgust insisted. "We have to do something. Remember my last birthday? We managed to keep Riley away from all vegetables."

"It was tough but we did manage," Anger agreed. "Not that Mom and Dad seemed to like it."

"Still have zero regrets about it though," Disgust smirked. "So seriously Sadness. What do you want? We can make Riley do something you like, or even figure out something to do when she goes to sleep or..."
