Our boots pressed into the fluffy clouds beneath us, yielding with each step. Jay bounded around with the unbridled enthusiasm of a child in a rainstorm, his laughter echoing through the ethereal expanse. "I can't believe we're actually here! It really looks like Heaven!" he exclaimed, his voice brimming with awe.
Despite Jay's infectious excitement, I couldn't suppress a snort at the notion of this place resembling any depiction of Paradise. My skepticism must have been evident, as Kai arched an eyebrow in my direction.
"Something on your mind?" he inquired, pausing in his stride. We all came to a standstill before the shimmering golden gates. I shook my head. "No, but we should establish some ground rules." The others gathered around me, understanding that Fenwick's welcoming facade often concealed treacherous intent.
With my arms crossed, I laid out the terms. "Firstly, when I give the signal to draw your weapons, you draw them." This proclamation took them aback. "But we can't just—" Cole began, only to be swiftly interrupted.
"Secondly, trust no one here." The Cloud Kingdom harbored a reputation for housing self-important individuals who believed they held dominion over Ninjago's fate. If anything they're entitled assholes who believe they are 'gods'.
My gaze sharpened as Fenwick approached us from the far side of the gate. "Thirdly, keep an eye on him," I murmured, discreetly nodding toward the Master Writer. The boys followed my gaze, then returned their attention to me, signaling their acknowledgment with silent nods.
"Welcome to the Cloud Kingdom. We've been expecting you," Fenwick greeted us with a manufactured smile. I concealed my inner disdain; the Cloud Kingdom meticulously documented every event.
That meant they had records of what unfolded after my death...
Jay eagerly raised his hand. "How are we—"
Fenwick interjected with a smug grin. "Standing on clouds?" he concluded. "Simple. Other realms abide by different laws. I'm Fenwick. I've been tasked with guiding you through." Call it childish, but have you ever encountered that one classmate universally despised for being a know-it-all?
"Nice to meet you. I'm—"
Fenwick promptly cut Kai off. "Kai, indeed. Your popularity among the other monks is well-known. Here in the Cloud Kingdom, we observe all that unfolds in Ninjago," he boasted. Yet, evidently, basic courtesy eluded him. At this juncture, perhaps my reaction bordered on petty.
"You've journeyed far in search of the Sword of Sanctuary, a formidable weapon capable of predicting your opponent's next move. It also serves as the second clue in locating the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master."
Zane's pirate accent provided a moment of levity amidst the tension. "Arrr. But how do ye—" Naturally, Fenwick couldn't resist interjecting. "Finish your sentences? I know, it's rather irksome, but up here, we possess, let's just say..." He tapped his chin in contemplation. "Foreknowledge of what's to come."
