A stack of paper comes down across my neck and I pull my head out of my arms to see Mr. Lyon peering down at me through his glasses.
"I wasn't sleeping sir," I say, disguising my yawn with a cough. "just resting my eyes."
Truth be told, my eyes, heavy with sleep were the fault of none other than Xavier who had spent another hour too long at my house, last night. Since the day he'd first appeared in my bedroom, his visits were becoming more frequent and often resulted in a night of sleepless sexual frustration and turmoil over the not-so-appropriate ways we spent our time.
"I don't care for the details-just-here, take this."
I glance down at the white slips of paper Mr. Lyon has forced into my hands and read. I can hardly understand the contents but a big word in bold stands out to me and I furrow my brows.
"Barcelona?"
Mr. Lyon waggles his eyebrows before making his way to the center of the classroom. "As most of you are already familiar with by now, the school organizes a special spring break trip each year for each grade. This year, the city chosen for your grade is none other than Barcelona."
There's low excited chatter that erupts across the class and for the most part, the reactions are positive, except for the unmistakable scrutiny from Adrianna.
"Barcelona?" She hisses, not-so-quietly under her breath. "I was literally just there a month ago, wasn't I, Rebecca?"
Mr. Lyon's gaze shoots to her like a laser beam. "Well, Adrianna and co, you are free to forfeit the trip, the way you have all notoriously done so, in the prior years." Mr Lyon smiles but he's really just baring his teeth. "In other words..nobody is forcing you to go."
Adrianna scowls in response.
"... As I was saying, please ensure you go over the details of the trip with your parents and or guardians. It will be over the course of about four days so mark that into your calendars and start looking forward to it!"
At the end of class, I walk into the hallway, still thinking about the trip. I've never traveled out of the United States before and I doubt it will be any fun now, considering my lack of friends, but my aunt had already paid for the trip, so I didn't really have much of a choice in the matter...
I'm continuing down the hall with my eyes glued to my phone, immersing myself with web images of Barcelona when I feel myself crash, head-first into the back of another human body and my phone clatters to the floor.
The girl in front of me who had been carelessly stumbling around when she crashed into me turns to widen her eyes, looks frantically to her friends then uses her hand to cover a nervous laugh. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry."
"No worries." I say wrinkling the spot on my nose that felt like it was bruising. She turns back towards her friends, and I kneel to pick up my phone and examine the new cracks on it.
With a frown, I look over to where my offender is still just a few feet away with two other girls crowding around a...door? They're giggling raciously without any awareness of their surroundings, staring through the doors vision panel as if the room beyond it contained all of the hidden secrets of life.
