"The real question is how did you manage to pass everything up until now?" I ask, raising my eyebrows.
"What do you think?" Clyde says from beside me. "He makes his tutor do it all for him."
I glance at Clyde who speaks without removing his eyes from the textbook infront of him. Although I wasn't officially his tutor anymore, he claimed I was the only person that helped him concentrate while studying.
"Don't listen to him, Isa." Drew says stretching his arms wide with a grunt. A blonde haired girl who walks by our table turns to smile slyly at Drew and his green eyes move to watch her pass by. "You know what, you guys have fun. I'm gonna use the bathroom for a second."
I shake my head as I watch Drew walk in the direction where the pretty girl had disappeared to. Clyde watches my obvious judgement with amusement. I meet his gaze and we both start to laugh.
When the laughter dies down Clyde lowers his head and picks up writing characters in his notebook but says, "How are you, anyways, Isa?"
The question is so sudden and it takes me a long moment to answer. "I'm fine," I say. "Although the only I think about is colleges these days. I'm stuck between three of them."
"It won't matter what you pick." Clyde says spinning around the pencil in his hand. "You're a smart girl, you'll do great anywhere."
I can't help but think about how my reaction would have been so different to his words just a few weeks ago. I would have gotten flustered, nervous, choked up, even. But now it was different. His words made me purely happy and grateful like he was really my friend.
"Thanks Clyde." I say. "What about you? How are you and Rebbecca?"
Clyde blinks and for a moment he just stares at me in surprise, like the question's caught him completely off guard. "Me and Rebecca? Oh...yeah, Rebbeca. She's fine."
"That's good."
"Yeah. Um, actually Isa," Clyde says shifting in his seat so he's leaned back into his chair and is now making direct eye contact with me. "I wanted to talk to you about something."
Curious as to what he could be suddenly talking about, I nod and say, "Sure, what is it?"
"Well I...I was wondering if you would be interested in-" While Clyde starts to speak, his eyes seem to wander distractedly on something happening behind me. He trails off then looks away from me altogether, back to the notebook in front of him.
"Nevermind."
Confused, I'm about to turn to see what he was looking at but I don't even have to. A warm, familiar scent engulfs me before I feel a tall presence come to a stand behind me.
My heart starts to pound faster and my stomach is in knots as I'm suddenly very consciously aware of my hair and my face and my clothes and everything and anything.
"Hi Xavier." Clyde says first and it's only when he extends his arm to do a weird guy handshake that Xavier comes into view.
My heart beats wildly at the sight of him. His blazer is gone so he's only sporting the crisp white collared shirt that's slightly unbuttoned at the chest. His hair has been cut shorter over the weekend so it frames the sharp planes and angles of his face nicer and his blue-grey eyes are as vivid as ever when he slightly turns his head to look at me. The hard look of his eyes doesn't escape me.
