Plane ride & sad memories

Claire gets on the plane and Owen wakes up. Charlie is still asleep next to him.

"Owen!" Claire says as she turns around.

"Didn't think you were ever gonna show up."  He replies his voice tired from sleep.

Claire looks at Charlie. "You brought her?" She says.

"Of course I brought her, she's my niece. Why is that a problem? She's staying with me for the month orders from my sister. And I love Charlie so if anything happens to her on that island it's on you. Plus you should thank her, she's part of the reason I'm even on this plane, also she wanted to come." He tells her.

"Is she gonna be a problem?"

"No. Not unless there's a bully there then she'll probably kick their ass. She has quite the reputation at school." He says smiling.

"What kind of reputation?" She asks skeptical. 

"Fighting. Only for people who deserve it, that's why she's with me, she got suspended. Broke a kids nose and busted his lip."

"And you're okay with that?"

"I'm proud of her for it. Her mom not so much."

"And her dad?"

"Doesn't have one." He replies sighing.

"Oh come on everyone has a dad. That's kinda part of how kids are made." She insists.

"First of all gross. Second she has a dad but he left when she was 3. Didn't want anything to do with her after her brother died."

"Wait a damn minute, she has siblings?"

"Had a sibling and yes. She had an older brother. My nephew. His name was Nick. He died when he was 18. Car accident." He says trying not to cry recalling the tough time.

"Oh my God. That's terrible. Then her dad just left too?"

"Yeah he was a dick. I went and helped out my sister after that too, I helped her take care of Charlie. Charlie doesn't remember too much of it cause she was 3 but she remembers the day he died that's for damn sure. I remember it too. My sister called me and told me that Nick died. I drove over there and found Charlie on the front step crying her eyes out." He says then gets a flashback.

(Flashback): Owen pulled into his sister's driveway and saw three year old Charlie sitting on the front step crying. She was waiting for him. He got out of his car and closed the door looking at Charlie with sad eyes. She looked up at him with tear stains on her face and she got up and ran over to him. He instantly keeled down as Charlie ran into his arms crying. He hugged her tight and rubbed her back as she cried into his shoulder. 

"He's gone." She sobbed. He stood up with her in his arms. 

"I know, Charlie, I know." He said rubbing her back and kissing the top of her head. His sister Amy then walked out the screen door with tears running down her face. She looked on the step for Charlie but then she looked in the driveway to see Owen holding Charlie as she cries. Amy looked at Owen with sad eyes. She walked over to him and he immediately held out an arm and hugged his sister and kissed her head while he still held onto Charlie with the other. "I'm so sorry, sis." He said and kissed her head again holding both of them close. Later they went inside and were in the kitchen discussing things about Nick while Charlie sat in Owen's lap as he held her. Then Amy's husband, Charlie's dad, Ron walked in the kitchen not a tear on his face. Owen never liked Ron. 

Owen scowled at him."Ron." He said. 

"Owen." He responded sitting on the counter. 

"Dad." Came Charlie's small voice. Owen looked down at her and gave her a small smile and stroked her hair.
