"But I want you to be there though," Gunner said complaining like always.

Cleo folded her arms staring at the phone in front of her. She was in her room contemplating every lie possible to tell her mom.

It was Saturday so both she and her mom were home, there wasn't a way she could lie and get away with this.

She didn't even really want to go to this thing Gunner was having at his house but a part of her just wanted to see him even though she was still upset for some stupid reason.

"It's not that serious they'll be other people there" She tucked her bottom lip in between her teeth.

"But they're not you though, I wanted you here" He sucked his teeth, Cleo could hear the playful disappointment in his voice.

"So what do you want me to do Gunner? I've been lying to my mom for almost a month about you and there's no way I could get there unless you come and pick me up. She's going to be home all day so I can't sneak out and there's nothing I could tell her" Cleo said not knowing what else to tell him.

"Wait wait I thought of something" He looked away from the TV he was playing his game on and back to his lap where his phone was.

"What?"

"Say you and Samir are going to hang out but one of his friends is gonna pick you up and drop you off" He suggested.

"No, because then she's gonna come to the car-"

"I don't care, you don't want me to meet your mama? Damn," He shook his head before looking back to the TV screen.

"No, I don't want you to meet her, there's no reason for you guys to" She snapped back.

"Well you'll have to if you wanna come over, unless you could think of something else" He explained out of ideas too.

"I can't think of anything else, that's the issue," Cleo said, and he shrugged. He was obviously more worried about seeing her than getting her in trouble.

"Well just use that excuse then. She likes Samir, she won't tell you no"

"I'll try it, I'll be back" Cleo rolled her eyes and set her phone down on the bed.

"Why are you walking so slow? You're up to something?" Her mom said looking at her intently while she walked down the stairs.

"No, I just wanted to ask you something though"

"Hurry up, my shows on"

"Samir's friend was gonna come over here and pick me up so we could meet at the movies with them tonight, I could go?" She could already tell by the look on her mom's face she was confused.

"Samir's friend is going to come here and take you to the movies to meet with Samir. Is that what you're telling me?"

"Yes, 'cause he lives closer and it would be easier so Samir wouldn't have to drive all the way back here" Cleo tried to convince.

"Who's all gonna be at the movies?"

"Like a couple of his friends..." She stated playing with her hands behind her back.

"So you're gonna be the only girl there, cause if so-"

"No, his friends are gonna bring their girlfriends, they'll be other girls up there"

"You're not lying to me, right? Cause Samir's not the type to not pick you up, how all of a sudden he's having his friend do it" Her mom questioned trying to piece this all together.
