I never considered myself anything special, I'm smart sure, but when you go to a college where everyone is competing to be at the top, you feel less special. I liked to build and tinker, make small things that make everyday life a little easier.I mostly design inventions, that was what I was good at. I'm not aiming to empress everyone, just do what I love and make my living that way.
My friend Sam on the hand, she lived by the saying "Go Big or Go Home". Wanting to recreate every cool, futuristic gadget she'd seen on tv or in a movie. Some worked to an extent, others were a big work in progress. She was good at the building part, designing was where she and I teamed up. I design, she builds.
My workshop is my favorite place, unfortunately, it's mine for only two more months. Sam and I will be graduating college soon. Most of my stuff was packed away in boxes, ready to be put in storage until we found a big enough place to live where all of our stuff would fit.
College had been stressful, but it was also fun. I have so many fond memories over the last four years, as I look at my reflection in the window, my hair reminds me of one of those memories. I had been dared by a classmate during a party to dye my hair pink or streak across campus, I went with option that wouldn't get me kicked out of school. That was two years ago, I actually liked how it looked and just kept maintaining the color. It was different but cute. Sam had been dying her hair bright red for years, now she tells everyone that we are on the hair color journey together.
As of right now, my lab only contained the essentials I needed for my senior project. That, and the enclosure for my pet mouse, Squeaks. He was a little gray mouse that was originally bought for the classic mouse maze experiment in one of my classes. My professor was originally going to just let him go outside, but I convinced him to let me keep the little guy.
Next door, I could hear Sam working away on whatever project she had thought up this morning. She was always busy, and never gave up on an idea no matter if it worked or not. That's what I admired about her.
People always wondered how we became friends, we were so different. Sam was outspoken and rambunctious, whereas I was more laid back. I could be outspoken as well, but Sam tended to take that role more often than not when we were together.
