"i wonder which will get you killed faster — your loyalty or your stubbornness?"

AFTER ENSURING JESSIE WAS SAFELY back home with her children, Lucia followed Abe out to the graveyard. He had Reg wrapped in a blue tarp and thrown over his right shoulder, Violet over his left, and a solemn expression on his face.
Laying their bodies out on the ground, he sighed heavily. Lucia watched as he pulled out a bottle of whiskey he had kept in the inside of his coat and took a swig, right before stretching out his arm and offering her the bottle. He didn't look over, his eyes stuck firmly on the silver wedding ring around Reg's finger. Lucia approached, taking a sip and joining him while the crickets chattered in the night.
"A long time ago, back in that supermarket, I knew a man." Abe said suddenly, catching her attention all over again.
She remembered the supermarket story. It had been a drunken confession, way back when. Rosita, Eugene and Dani slept soundly but not the two of them. They sat beside each other, sharing stories and drinking down half a bottle of whiskey. When that ran out, they used the rosé. Abe had complained about the wine for at least an hour before it got to him, transforming his complaints to giggles and anecdotes. And the supermarket story was the worst thing she could've ever imagined.
"One of the toughest sons of bitches I've ever met." He continued, his knuckles paling from his grip around the neck of the bottle. "He fought dead pricks like it was his job, and took down men bigger than him with ease. Was the only other person in that store I could trust. He didn't hurt my family. He hurt the men that did though. Stood right beside me till he had to move on."
Lucia nodded, wrapping her arms around her knees that were drawn to her chest. "Impressive."
"He was." Abe agreed, gulping down some more liquor, continuing the process of offering to Lucia for her drink. "And yet, even after all the bullshit, the main thing I remember about that crazy bastard is how goddamn loyal he was." Lucia's gaze softened as she rested her chin on her knees. "Treated me like I was his own after a matter of weeks. I couldn't thank him enough for that. And I hope he's with his brother right now. He deserved that."
"He sounded like a great guy." Lucia told him.
"He was. That's what I liked about Reg. He was loyal. A guy you could count on. It's what's important in a world like this."
Lucia nodded as she moved over to Violet's tarp covered body, tucking away a lock of blonde beneath the plastic sheet. "Violet reminded me of Dani."
