Almost a week had passed since I last heard from Javier. It was Friday now, and his silence weighed heavily on me. The last message I received from him still lingered in my mind: 'I really wanted to cook for you'. I didn't answer, and now I regretted it deeply. I had lied, using work as an excuse when I was simply scared of where our relationship was heading. We'd only slept together twice and flirted a lot, but we hadn’t named what we had. Now, I wondered if I was the one who was immature and scared of a serious relationship.

Today, I had the day off, and I was contemplating visiting Javier at his office, hoping he would be there. It wasn't just about seeing him; I also had some papers he needed to sign. As I prepared to leave, Liam, a colleague from the agency who had shown a lot of interest in me lately, asked if I wanted to go for a walk. Liam had been at the agency a bit longer than me and worked in the corporate and tax team. We had been talking a lot recently, and I decided to agree.

As we walked, my mind kept drifting back to Javier. When we arrived in front of Javier's building, my attention was caught by the café across the street. I saw Javier coming out with the girl he had stood up. They were laughing, and he had one hand in his pocket and the other on her lower back. Jealousy flared inside me.

"Madison, are you okay?" Liam asked, noticing my sudden shift in mood.

"I'm fine," I replied quickly, unable to take my eyes off Javier and the girl.

Liam followed my gaze and then looked back at me. "Is there something else going on here?"

I hesitated. "Well, I... ," I said finally, unable to keep the frustration out of my voice. "He...we had a thing actually."

Liam's eyebrows shot up. "Had? Seems like there's still something there."

I sighed. "It's complicated. We had a bit of a falling out, and now..." I gestured towards Javier and the girl. "Now it seems he's moved on."

Liam looked thoughtful. "Do you want to talk about it? Sometimes it helps to get things off your chest."

I shook my head. "Not right now. Let's just keep walking."

They were walking in our direction, heading to cross the street. They kept laughing and talking, Javier even pulling her closer to him. As they reached us, Javier's expression changed. He went serious, his gaze fixed on Liam for so long that Liam shifted uncomfortably.

"Madison," Javier said coolly.

"I was going to ask if you wanted to go out for some drinks," I said, trying to keep my voice steady, "but I see you're busy."

Javier glanced at Liam again before looking back at me. "You look busy too," he replied, a hint of irritation in his voice.

I handed him the folder I had brought. "You need to have these papers signed and in my office by Monday morning," I said, turning to leave.
