Prologue

Kasha could feel— her fingers turning numb every second that she picked away at the grain. She held the grain peice infront of her, squinting at it for a mere moment before she dropped it into the basket beside her. A few feet infront of her, was Kassian ripping into the dirt with his gloved hands, his shovel long discared as he worked away at the grain plants. The sun beat down on the both of them, making beads of sweat litter their foreheads, and their hair cling to their faces. Kasha groaned tipping her head back, as the sun basked her face, Kassian shot her a concerned glance before it shifted elsewhere.

"You dont with that basket yet, Kasha?" A voice sounded from behind her. Kasha tilted her head, relizing it was only Hayes, one of the only boys that worked in the fields and nodded, pushing the basket towards him.

"Please, take it." Hayes shot her a smile, picking up the basket and tucking it underneath his arm. Hayes didnt even have time to turn before he was knocked off his feet, slamming into the hard ground face first. The basket tumbled away from him, snd the contents spilled out.

"Watch it!" Kasha jumped to her feet, glaring at the peacekeeper, who only laughed in her face, his hand pressed against his gun.

"You wanna play, little girl?" The peacekeeper teased, snatching the hat off her head. Kasha tried to take it back, but the peacekeeper only shoved her away, keeping the hat above his head so she was unable to reach it.

Kassian stood up beside her, wiping his dirty hands on his pants as he watched the commotion go on.

"Isnt it reaping day?" The peacekeeper tuanted, "it'd be a shame if your name was pulled— I'd watch that any day."

"Just give her back the hat, then we can all just go on our way." Kassian tried to convince, pulling Hayes back onto his feet.

"Nah, I dont think I will. About time you district scum finnally learn your lesson— and last I checked purposly disrupting grain production has a fine." He turned to Hayes.

Hayes sighed, "You know we dont have that kind of money— it wasn't even my fualt. You knocked it over!"

"No, I dont think I did." The peacekeeper continues, his hand latching onto the gun taped to his side, and before they knew it, the gun was pressed against Hayes forhead.

Hayes took in a shaky breath, his eyes widening, but nobody dared to say anything.

"You gonna talk back to me now?" The peacekeeper asked him, a smirk placed on his face. He took the safety off the gun, a loud click ringing in their ears. "Dont worry, nobodys gonna remember you in a few years anyways."

Hayes locked eyes with Kasha, and she didnt even relize what she was doing untill she had crashed against the ground with the peacekeeper underneath her. She pummeled his face with her fists, shouting at him. "I'll put you in the arena myself! You'll be the first one I kill." She shoved his face in the dirt, restricting his breathing, she could feel Kassian and Hayes trying to pull her off of the man, but she wouldnt budge. They both knew he deserved it, but they wouldnt let Kasha get introuble for it.

"Kasha leave it! Lets go!" Kassian urged, his hands gripping her shoulders, but she shoved him off of her. The peacekeeper took her momentarily distraction to grab his gun that was discared a few feet away. A heavy shot rang past them, making them all freeze, nobody moved, unaware of who it had hit.

"I'll kill all of you!" The peacekeeper screamed his gun now on Kasha. "You hear me!" Kasha snatched his gun, ramming it into the side of his head, he lulled back slightly, and Kasha tossed the gun into the fields. All Kasha could remember was the way she gripped onto the peacekeeper, slamming his head against the ground untill he eventually stopped fighting, his body going still beneath her. Kassian pulled her up, gripping her arm so tightly she was afraid he'd yank it off.

The three off them exchanged wary glances, and at first nobody dared to move.

"What'd you do?" Hayes was the first to speak up, his eyes wide as he stared at the bloody peacekeeper.

"I—" her voice cuaght in her throat, unable to properly take in what she had done.

"Come on, Lets get out of here." Kassian's eyes softened at her disheveled state, "I dont wanna be here when they find him."

From that day on, nobody spoke about what happened. The three of them stayed silent about it, not uttering a word, even when the peacekeepes made their rounds to try and figure out who killed the man, but they never found out. The civilians of district nine kept quite, hiding the three teenagers from their unrequited fate that would soon come barrowling down on them.
Kasha had killed a peacekeeper and soon they would try and kill her.
