There's a fat guy sitting in my seat. Technically, I'm not supposed to be out here at all. But me and August are scared to death and don't know what the hell is happening. The big fat guy is Otis. He acted all sweet and nice to me and August. Like all the adults do. Since this Otis guy took my seat, I gave to sit on the floor infront of August.I know what's happening now. A boy my age got shot by said Otis. When Otis himself told me and August, I was more than shocked. His Father and his father's friend are here, but those two are in the room with the bleeding boy.
August plays with a strand of my hair out of boredom. I don't like it when people touch my hair, but I was too bored to care. I was anxious, eager to find out what happened. I began to chew on the sides of my fingers , my hangnails.
Then, Maggie came into the room.
"Maggie."
"What are you two doing in here? I know Beth told you two to stay in the room."
"What happened? Why is there a bleeding boy in the guest room?"
Maggie sighed, putting her forehead in her hand as she motioned for August to sit down next to me. August obeyed. Maggie sat down next to Otis, gave him a look, and began to tell us everything.
"Well, while you two where in yalls room, a man came runnin' to us with a boy in his arms. The boy was shot. By Otis."
She paused and Otis gave another ashamed look as he looked the other way. Pitiful.
"But he's all good now. Hershel's helpin' him out just fine. The boys names Carl. If y'all want, y'all can say hi, make a new friend."
"I don't think that's a good idea."
I mumbled, I was still in my pajamas and was so tired. And hungry. Very hungry. I bit my cheek, waiting for Maggie to reply as she tried to make light of the situation.
"Why not?"
"He's just been shot. I think the last thing he's lookin' for is a friend. He probably just wants his dad."
Maggie sighed, nodding along with my words.
"You're probably right, Genesis."
Maggie said, leaning back in her seat. Just then, two men exited the hurt room. Me and August turned around, still anxious to hear about something with this Carl kid. Maggie scooted to the front of her chair, waiting for a reply from one of the men.
The man gives me and August a look before he puts his hands in his pockets, taking a breath and licking his lips.
"He's stable for now."
Otis looks relieved at the man's words, leaning back in his chair and rubbing his hand over his mouth. Me and August gave each other a look. I still don't know what's fully happening, or what the whole situation is, but I have an understanding and that's all I need.
"Lori has to be here, Shane. She has to know."
"Who's Lori..?"
I asked. I regretted letting my words slip out of my mouth without being spoken to. It's not polite to interrupt adults conversations. I look back at Maggie, while the others in the room look over at me. I probably shouldn't have done that.
"No one, Gen."
Maggie says to me in dismissal, giving me a pat on the back, everyone's attention turning back to the two men in the front of the room.
"Okay, I get that. I'm gonna handle it. But you've got to handle your end."
"My-My end?"
"Your end is being here. For your son. Even if he didn't need your blood to survive, there's no way I'd ever let you walk out that door. I'd- I'd break your legs if you tried, you know that right..?"
