After a while of some more adult talk about where to find the supplies Hershel needed, and where to get it, Maggie volunteered to go find this Lori woman. Me and August hadn't got much of a choice when it came to things to do.  Hershel asked me to rummage through the house to find something that could help Carl.

I've never met this kid before in my life. I've never once spoken to him. Didn't know his name or anything about this kid, but I'm expected to tend to his shotgun wounds. I stood on my tippie toes to reach the top of the hallway closet, I groaned trying to grab a pair of tweezers and yet another first aid box

"Damn it!"

I whispered to myself.

"Watch that mouth young lady."

Hershel called from the guest bedroom. How did he hear me? I paused a moment before finally jumping high enough to grab my hands on the cold metal tweezers. I put those aside and used all my leg strength to grab the aid box. After that, I went to me  and Auggies bedroom and grabbed an extra sheet that Maggie laid out for us under our bed.

I bet she wouldn't mind. I gave all my findings to Hershel, and as a reward I got a pat on the back and a "good job sweetie." Totally worth it. August didn't find much, just some old towels and gauze. But every bit helps.

I had lost track of what time it was, or what was happening. I sat next to Carl in the bed, on a chair next to Hershel answering Otis's wife. I wouldn't ever want to bring disrespectful things or anything to do with the seemingly lifeless boy on the bed, but it took absolutely everything in me not to make a face at him.

It just seemed gross and, I don't know. Weird. He looked pale, that was a sign of blood loss. He looked sickly, which means he will probably be in pain when he wakes up. It was almost dark out now. I swung my feet over the floor, kicking them back and forth, picking at my fingers in my lap. Still only had on my owl night gown.

Hershel excused himself from the room to go talk to Rick. I watched him leave out the door and I was left with Carl and Ottis's wife. She was a hot mess- scratch that, a mess. I could hear the rumble of the horses feet outside. Maggie was arriving back soon. I stood up and booked it all the way to the front door.

I ran all through the house while Otis's wife called my name and cursed at me telling me to come back. I opened the door quietly so no one would see me watching. There was Maggie. With a woman behind her on her bourse. The woman was very pretty. So pretty. She had little past shoulder length rich brown hair and fair skin.

Maggie rode her horses all the way up to the gates, I watched as the woman hopped off the horse and ran to Rick, pulling him into a tight embrace, giving him a hug. That tugged on my heartstrings, for sure. I watched the woman- who I figured was Lori, run with Rick all the way up the steps as I stepped aside, watching them scurry to carls bedside.

Maggie and Hershel followed behind after a couple minutes, Maggie pulling me aside.

"Wheres your brother?"

"Our room."

"Why aren't you in there too? You aren't supposed to be out here listenin' in on adults matters, come on. Let's get you into some...other pajamas and into bed Gen."

I nodded, walking with Maggie to my bedroom. The room was spilt off into two sections, one the window and play side, the other the bed and closet side. Maggie rummaged through the closet and pulled out yet another nightgown.

I wouldn't complain, at least it's something. I grabbed it and walked out into the hall and into the bathroom. I assumed Maggie was helping August get changed in our room. I shut the bathroom door behind me as I heard silent wails and sobs from the guest room.
