"Hey! Hey!" You suddenly get abruptly shook awake. "Y/n it's time to go!"You open your eyes to see your little siblings smiling from ear to ear. "Do you remember what today is?" Holden remarked.
Elaine looked like she was about to explode out of excitement. You sighed a sigh of defeat realizing it's too late to fake being asleep. "Hmm idk maybe my birthday?"
"Nooooo" Elaine giggled. "Oh wait I know! It's your birthdays!" You launched over the side of the bed, tickled them all over. "It's the reaping silly!" You stop suddenly. "Oh right." The reaping was today. How could you forget?
Every year, you and your dad try your best to make the games seem fun for them. But every year it just makes you hate the games even more.
Ever since your brother was put into the games it's harder and harder to hide the truth from them. And it's also harder and harder to hide my hate for the games.
"Ah look who's awake!" Your dad walked up to the foot of your bed. He kneeled down in front of the twins.
"Hey, I just made some blueberry pancakes." He smiled trying to get them excited. "How about you two get some before me and sissy eat them all." He tickled them out of the room while growling. He stood up slowly out of pain, he was a very large man way over 6 foot tall. Which isn't always a blessing, it's hard to work with so much pressure on your spine. Which forced you the main bread winner in the household, ever since your brother Jain died.
He sat on the very edge of your bed, trying not to take up too much room. "Hey honey bear how're you doing?"
You looked up at him. His face looked almost pitiful or something of the sort. Even though it was hard to read it definitely wasn't pleasant.
You scrunched your legs to your chest and wrapped your arms tightly. "I don't know. I'm nervous dad. What if this times different? What if I do get chosen? I can't leave you."
Tears started running down your cheeks, quickly wiping them away. "Hey, hey, Y/n." He cupped his hands around your face.
"You'll make it out. Picked or not you'll make it out listen to me. Remember what we always said?" It was hard to look up at him without getting emotional.
"Survival depends on what you do, not what you think." He smiled. "Exactly right. If I could, I'd put all my bets on you honey bear." His encouragement made you smile. He always knew how to cheer you up no matter what.
"Know come on and get some breakfast. Don't want the little monsters to eat it all." He stood up very slowly and made his way out your bedroom door.
You sat there for a minute or two. Just praying that you nor the twins would be pulled. It was their first reaping after all.
Slowly but surely you got out of bed and quickly got dressed in a nice white and pink floral dress. Also putting up your H/c in a low but neat bun.
Walking out into the kitchen you see the twins still in their pajamas. "Dad! You were supposed to get them dressed! We're gonna be late finish your last bite and go get dressed. Nice clothes remember?" They both nodded and scarfed down their last bits of pancake and headed off to their room.
You sat down at the kitchen table, your dad putting 2 large blueberry pancakes on your late. "Sorry kiddo I said they'd be all gone." He shrugged and whisked away the children's plates.
"They needed it more than me anyway with all the growing they needed to do." Even though you just inhaled the pancakes and left over bits off the kids plates.
"You're still growing too kiddo, you're only 16. Well at least I hope you keep growing. You're a spitting image of me." He turned around flexing and poked at your bicep.
"Haha I hope so too papa." You smiled but couldn't help but feel empty. What if you never make it past 16? What if these are the last pancakes dad will ever make you?
Your thoughts interrupted when there was a knock on the door. Your dad slowly tried to make his way to the door basically limping. "No, no, dad I got it."
You leaped up from your chair and peaked out the panes atop the door. It was no other than Peeta Mallark. Every single Sunday since you were born the Mallarks always came by to pick up herds.
Your family was one of the few families in town who grew all kinds of different herbs and spices. Peeta or one of his brothers always came by every Sunday around 9am to retrieve their herbs for their breads.
"Oh hi Peeta." Everyday since you were little, Sundays were the best days. Because of Peeta. He was such a sweet and genuine personality, the few times you talked outside of the deliveries were always so refreshing.
"Hey honey bun." He's called you that since you were little. It's what your mom used to call you, and for the longest time he believed that was your real name. That Y/n was a nickname.
"You know you can say Y/n right?" You opened the door wider to let him through. "I know. But you're so much sweeter than Y/n. Honey bun." He smiled the way he always did. So warm and sweet, he should be the one called honey bun.
"Ah Peeta! The bags are right out the door towards the tomatoes you cant miss it. They're quite heavy though, make Y/n help you." Peeta smiled again. "Of course Mr. L/n." As always you walked out back and helped Peeta load the bags into the bed of their truck.
"Aren't you excited?" You questioned while throwing some rosemary in the bed. Peeta looked confused. "For what?"
"The reaping of course." He stopped moving the bags and looked at you. "Oh yeah of course I'm excited for 23 more innocent kids to die on live television Y/n." He threw another bag onto the truck in irritation.
"I'm sorry I'm just used to talking like that for the twins." You both just kept throwing the bags into the back of the truck in silence. "Hey honey bun?"
"Mhm?" You continued to load the bags while listening. "Do you want me to take you guys down the the hall with me? I just have to drop these off first." You loaded the last bag and looked up. "That'd be great Peeta, thanks." You smiled and he smiled back.
His smile was so infectious. His laugh, his eyes he was so mesmerizing. Sometimes you believed he felt the same. Calling you honey bun, always having and excuse to come over. Maybe Jain was right? Maybe he did like you back?
"Hey Peeta?" You called to him before heading inside. "Yeah honey bun?" Frozen, conflicted if you should ask him now because you're alone, or after the reaping when you have time to talk.
"Could we talk after the reaping?" He slammed the tailgate shut. "Of course! Only if you help me unload these when we get to the bakery." He teased, something you loved about him. He could take a joke.
Y'all finished loading up the truck and you headed inside. "Hey dad, Peeta is gonna take us to the reaping is that ok?"
"Of course! How nice of him" You kissed him on the cheek and gave him a big hug. "I love you dad. I just want you to know." He hugged back. "Of course I know honey bear. You're my rock." The twins came running past you two swiftly out the door in a split second.
"Hey! No running!" Your dad yelled out the door but lacked a response. "I gotta go dad." He let go of your hug and held your shoulders tight. "Everything will be alright. Don't worry at all honey." He patted your shoulders and rushed you out the door.
