River had found it odd that she dreamed about him, she barely even considered them friends at this point. Just a touch behind to being friends, close acquaintances. She wouldn't lie that she did think he was attractive and a bit of a mystery to her, she'd give him that. It was a nice dream though and she was not going to say anything about it to anyone, that was one thing she knew. Because if we were being real Jasper wasn't truly attainable for her, why would he be?
The month following the near death was filled with lots of negative feelings from Bellas side of life, but River for her it was normal for her. Everyone was concerned for their well being, car accidents don't happen often at the school lot often. Bella kept trying to make Edward the hero of the story, but their friends could never remember him even being there which just made her sound crazy but River knew she was right.
On River's side of things, she and Jasper were talking more than she wanted too. It was honestly the second biggest thing after the wreck, everyone was shocked that a Hale was talking to an outsider. Jessica was riding River's back trying to get every speck of information out of the girl, and it was hard not to tell her.
Which lead her to the last class where he was waiting, he had picked up the book she read the first day she came to school. The Pearl.
"Shocking read you got there Jasper," she commented slyly.
"Well you know, I had to see what was so interesting in the book again to refresh my memory," he told her.
"Fair, it's not the most interesting of books if I'm being honest," she said truthfully. "It more shows the evils of vanity and greed, corruption even."
"That makes it interesting River, shows even the nicest and hardworking people can change with finding riches," he spoke with almost a nostalgic tone which peaked her interest.
"You seem like it's almost happened to you in a way," she said.
"You could say it has, but it's not important to today," he answered. There was an immediate shift in his demeanor, carefree and relaxed to stone cold, shut away.
She couldn't respond as the teacher was starting, but she honestly couldn't pay attention. Jasper walled up in record speed and in their conversations that had never happened, maybe this was a sign not to dig deep with him.
There was another part of her that honestly wasn't too concerned with it because it's not like she needed to know. But it felt like he wanted her to pry with the glances through the class, him still reading the book, and even at the end of class when he started another conversation.
"I didn't mean to come off rude earlier," he explained slightly. "That was a sore subject, but that doesn't mean we can't keep talking, right?"
It was like he was searching her approval, "That's fine Jasper. But I've got to get going, have a good rest of your day yeah?"
He looked confused by what she had said, was she upset with him or did she really not care? He didn't mind if she was upset, but he would if she didn't care. He needed to keep digging around for cues on how she felt. She was hard to read in many ways.
"I will thank you," he answered in a strange manor and then walked away in deep thought. She didn't mind though and went about her day.
There was nothing for her to even say, because why would she. Besides that little thing was barely anything she hadn't dealt with before with a guy trying to impress her. Sure that could be seen as a little cocky for her to think, but lets be real why would one of the prettiest boys in the school who had celebrity status keep talking to her and no one else. Jessica was no help to her way of thinking either, Jessica kept hyping her up about this whole situation. But that meant she would keep getting all the juicy details from River about the mysterious boy of her choosing, because she knew Bella was never going to say anything.
