Never in his 142 years of life did Bokuto think he would fall in love with a mortal.

Yes, the mortal in question was beautiful, yet this was such unknown territory for the master of the castle. And to top it off, he had fallen for a guy! Not that it was unheard of, but one would assume that the guy falls for the girl, no matter how dangerous the situation is. He'd read it in several novels before, smirking and cringing at how humanity portrayed vampires.

Sure, they weren't human, but they weren't monsters, so to speak. Twilight especially pressed his buttons with the strangeness of it all. You don't burn but you sparkle in the sun? Who made that shit up??

Bokuto gave an aggravated sigh into his hand and dragged it down his face. He was a creature of the night, elusive and cold to the touch. With pupils not dissimilar to a cat's, his amber eyes swept the dark bedroom around him. The mortal - Akaashi was his name - had stepped out to do some exploring, courtesy of Oikawa. The two had sparked an unlikely friendship with their clashing personalities, Akaashi's calm demeanor balancing out Oikawa's exuberance. Bokuto was grateful that someone got along with him, if not also for the chance of a distraction.

He stood up and crossed the room to his vanity, picking up the knife Akaashi had taken a slight interest to. He remembered how he had pounced on the poor teen, the hunger that had consumed him, yet also the pleasure... And there had been something in the boy's eyes, a faint glimmer beyond the initial panic of the moment...but it couldn't have been...

He shook his head firmly, setting the knife down. No, he shouldn't get ahead of himself. Mortals don't love monsters like him. It simply wasn't done.

But the kisses.

Those weren't so easily explained away.

Bokuto paced around the room, feet padding through the soft carpet beside his four-post bed. He didn't remember Akaashi drinking alcohol at the dinner that night, nor did he smell any on his breath before he...before they...

"Ughhh!!" He let out a frustrated groan, throwing his hands up at nothing. A mortal loving him? Preposterous. This had to be a scheme of some sort.

But the look he'd seen that morning...

Bokuto slapped himself. No, he told himself. It's just the lack of blood I've had for the past few weeks, and then I finally got some. Yes, that's it. He always went a bit overboard with new victims after a dry spell. A fond memory of a bride hanging upside down screaming popped up as he grinned darkly. Her blood had come after almost a month being stuck in the castle, to the relief of everyone. He had been especially irritable in that time. As Kuroo had teased, "It was not a good look for you, bro."

Bokuto turned to the large windows, the night sky full of stars above an evergreen forest outside. An owl landed on the stone balustrade, meeting his eyes through the glass. They just stared for a bit, then the owl gave a hoot and flew away, gliding silently on his large wings towards the pines below.

Owls were highly regarded by Bokuto as wise creatures of the forest. One had guided him home when he was still in his adolescence, and he had cared for many families of them since.

This gave Bokuto an idea. One that, if it worked, he would truly know if Akaashi was indeed a good match for him or just another plaything to be discarded.

Ignoring the nibbling of guilt at his conscience, he pulled up a schedule and began formulating a plan.

I tried bruh.

I don't know what I was doing in the previous stories, but man is this a train wreck. I'm attempting to save what little I can, but prepare for a rocky road ahead.
