Sandy's POV

Pete stood taller then when he left and his features had made small but noticeable changes especially in his face. He had cut his long hair so that it stuck to his head and probably wouldn't fly in the wind. He had a thick 5' oclock shadow which made him look a bit more rugged but all in all he was still the same Pete handsome and lovable, and I missed him. This surprise was surely bitter-sweet and I wish the circumstances were different.

I looked at him studying the face that left the day after school let out of 11th grade. He wasn't suppose to be back for about another month were he would enroll back into our school. What brought him back so early.. Did Italy go as he had planned?

"What brings you back home so early Pete?" I questioned him, not really wanting to talk at this moment but still wanting an answer.

"Well I spent most of my summer in Sicily with my Grandparents and don't get me wrong it was fun but I just missed the States so I flew in last night and was going to surprise you and D tomorrow. Carla had picked me up from the airport and dropped me off with my parents. The plan was she was going to pick me up early tomorrow and I would surprise you guys but Carla had just called me an hour ago with a change of plans because of-" Pete trailed off and I was grateful.

"Oh.. Ok." I said before taking my original seat by Kyle. Pete sat by Carla and once again the room filled with silence.

We waited for another ten to fifteen minutes before I begun to start really worrying about Dalia.

"Carla." I whispered even though there was really no need to. "Carla.. Umm has D texted you or anything telling you where she is?" I asked thinking of all the places she could be.

"No. But i'm getting worried too.. All I hope is that she doesn't do anything stupid." Carla said with a weary expression.

"Maybe I should go look for her." I suggested.

"Stay here for now, if she doesn't show in another five minutes I will call her and if no answer I will go search for her in ten of that five." Carla said before leaning back into her seat, I didn't even notice that she had leaned forward.

The ten minutes went by and still D didn't show up. I felt sick to my stomach now and I knew Kyle could tell.

"Try to go to sleep San, I will wake you if anything happens." Kyle promised in a whisper to me.

"I have already tried, but it's like my mind wont let me." I shifted a little and watched as Carla started getting ready to leave.

"Where are you going to look first Carla?"

"Well I'm going to swing by the house first and if sh-"

The door swooshed open and Dalia stood in the entrance. She looked as if she went through hell and back with out a bit of sleep the whole trip. Her clothes were in dismay and her eyes were red and her hair was in a messy bun. Her tan skin was pale and the only thing with any sort of color was her tear stained cheeks. her makeup was passed the stage of messy and it made under her eyes look dreadfully dark as if deprived of sleep. She trembled in the entrance for all to see her.

"Dalia.." Carla was the only to speak and the only to move. She walked over the D and wrapped her in her arms in a loving embrace. Dalia returned the favor and began to sub ever so softly if this room had been filled with just a little noise you wouldn't have heard her.

I walked over to D and me and Carla helped her to sit down. Kyle went to go get some water for her and the room had a different mood to it now.

Kyle had brought back the water and D sat and drank with no emotion at all, it was if she was in her own little world. Carla tried a few times to speak to her but D only shook her head in response even if the question wasn't a yes or no answer.

The night soon became early morning and Kyle, Mick, and Pete had fallen asleep.

"What time is it Carla?" I asked beginning to feel myself nodding off.

"It's 3:15 mama, why not get some sleep ok."

"I'll try."

It was about another 30 minutes before the doctor walked in and when he did he looked tired himself.

Carla's POV

The doctor stepped in when Dalia and Sandy had finally fallen asleep and he looked around the room to see the teens snoozing on the chairs. I stood up and greeted him and he told me his name was Dr. Lee.

"Are you Ben's mother?" He questioned me.

"No but i'm the closest thing he has to it."

"Ok. Well Ben is in critical condition but we managed to stabilize him. All but three of his ribs are broken and he has a broken nose and finger one of his lungs collapsed and he has 11 stitches on the side of his face and he has some head trauma. We are going to keep him in the hospital for about two weeks and do some test on him before we send him home, any questions?"

"Yes um will he be able to make a full recovery from this?"

"We aren't sure. Today we were focusing on saving the boys life but tomorrow we will take some X-rays and take a look at whats going on inside his head. but for the other parts of his body the longest to heal right now is the ribs, the lung seems to be recovering already."

"Now the scar on his face-"

"Yes I have been meaning to ask you about that. The boy has other scars but this was a blow to his face by a blade. Now you said that you are the closest thing he has to a mother. Where are his parents?"

"Well we have no idea who his mother is and his father works for my husband." I lied smoothly for Ben.

"Your husband?"

"Yes my husband."

Dr. Lee opened his mouth as if he was going to say something but then closed it.

"Please speak Dr. Lee."

"It's not my job to ask personal questions about the family. I'll just leave that to the social worker. So is there any more questions?"

"Yes." I went over to Dalia and woke her up along with Sandy and the other children before explaining with Dr. Lee had said to me just minutes before and let them have a turn to ask questions.

All but D had a queestion to ask.
