DAMIAN

"Look at those two. Bawling about nonsense from the moment they get to school." Emile groaned.

I crossed my arms and frowned. Becky and Anya were busy rattling about cartoons and movies in front of us. I was not in the right mood, especially after all that had happened recently.

"Yeah, midterms are almost here. How much studying do you think they've done?" Ewen agreed.

But suddenly the pink-haired girl stopped her tracks, and a piece of paper fell to the ground. "Oh no. I just dropped this super cool picture of my dog! Gosh, I'm so clumsy."

The hell?

"Oh yeah, so I heard the test is gonna cover something about the Great War." I placed my hands in my pockets and continued to stroll with my best friends.

"Thank God, I studied everything from the textbook and that was all I could understand."

We laughed as we continued our way to the Arts and Crafts classroom. From behind I could still hear Anya and Becky's discussion about something stupid.

"Can I keep this picture?" That was Becky. "Oh my God, thank you so much!"

"Give it back! I need that for Sy-on Boy!"

My ears suddenly felt hot as I heard her call me—I mean that's not my name, but still, it was something she always referred to me as. And to admit it, I was quite curious to see what she wanted to show me.

"Do those two ever shut up?" Ewen grumbled.

I shook my head to be transported back to reality. What was I thinking? Of course not! Silly!

"So, um, Lord Damian, what happened to Odessa after she talked to you?" Ewen asked. "Did she talk to you more after that?"

"Wh-what? Why are you asking me? I don't know." I clenched my teeth.

It was so weird.

I was already in a bad mood when Odessa and her friends approached me before the first period. Max was still at the vet, and I couldn't stop thinking about him. I sat at the back of the classroom with Ewen and Emile, trying to distract myself from my thoughts.

Ewen and Emile were joking about something, but I wasn't really paying attention. I kept glancing at my clock, hoping school could just end. My mood must have been obvious because Ewen nudged me.

"What's got you so grumpy today, Lord Damian?" he asked.

"Max is at the vet," I muttered. "Just a check-up, but I hate not being there."

"Ah, that sucks," Ewen said sympathetically. "He'll be fine, though."

Before I could respond, a group of girls approached us. Odessa Olsen was at the front, looking cheerful as ever with a different colored bow again. Ava-Rose, Lina, Melanie, and Brooklyn, followed closely behind, giggling and whispering. They were starting to build a crowd.

Oh no.

"Damian?" Odessa called out, her voice bright.

I looked up, not really in the mood for whatever this was. "Yeah?"

"Hi! Um, we were just wondering..." Giggle. "Um, what's your favorite color?" she smiled her ugly smile.

I blinked. "Green. Why?"
