The next day, just as the sun began to cast its golden rays over Fairclough, a letter arrived bearing news. Dathan's hands trembled slightly as he broke the seal, his heart pounding with a mix of apprehension and relief.

"The investigation is over," he announced, his voice filled with a sense of finality. "We're to return to Hinley."

Lydia's heart sank at the thought of leaving the sanctuary of Fairclough so soon. She had grown accustomed to the peaceful rhythms of life there, finding solace in its quiet beauty. But she knew that their return was inevitable, that they could not delay the inevitable forever.

"The repairs to the room are almost complete," Damian continued, his tone reassuring. "It's time for us to go home."

Lucille stepped forward, her expression one of quiet understanding. "I'll stay behind," she said, her voice steady despite the sadness in her eyes. "Julianna's governess is yet to return, we might as well spend some time alone here."

Lydia felt a surge of gratitude towards her mother-in-law. Lucille had been a pillar of strength throughout their ordeal, her unwavering support a source of comfort in their darkest hours. "Thank you, Mama," she said softly, her voice filled with emotion.

Julianna, peaked from behind her mother. "I'll keep Mama company. Worry not about us, Lydia." she said with a smile, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

With their plans settled, Lydia began to prepare for their departure. She packed their belongings with care, each item a reminder of the life they were leaving behind at Fairclough. As she looked around the familiar surroundings, she felt a pang of sadness at the thought of saying goodbye.

But she knew that they could not linger forever. The journey back to Hinley would be the next chapter in their story, a chance to rebuild and move forward. They bid farewell to Fairclough, Lydia couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the time they had spent there. It had been a place of refuge, a sanctuary in the storm, and she knew that its memory would stay with her always.

The journey back to Hinley was fraught with challenges, the weather proving to be as tempestuous as their own emotions. Dark clouds loomed overhead, unleashing torrents of rain that lashed against the carriage windows with relentless fury.

Despite the inclement weather, Lydia, Evangeline, Sam, and Dathan pressed on, their determination unwavering. The road stretched before them, winding its way through the mist-shrouded countryside, each mile bringing them closer to their destination.

As dusk began to fall and the rain showed no signs of abating, they were forced to seek refuge in a humble inn along the way. The warm glow of candlelight beckoned to them from within, promising respite from the cold and damp. The hostess welcomed them with a huge grin, because their coin showed they could afford the place. She immediately had her helpers bring up their things got fires roaring in each room.

Lydia found herself accompanied by Sam, which her maid did not comment on. She climbed the stairs and ignored the curious glances they got from the other patrons who were also seeking shelter.  Once they entered the room she paid for, they sought the warmth of the fire, grateful for the chance to rest. As they settled in, the sound of rain pattering against the windowpanes provided a soothing backdrop to their thoughts.

Meanwhile, Evangeline and Dathan took charge of securing provisions for their journey ahead. The pairing was unusual but Lydia noticed how distracted her friend had been since they began their journey back home. So she did not contest to her wanting something else to do. And Dathan could use some company, too. Upon arriving at the inn, the women around have been eyeing him. Much like her husband, her brother-in-law would turn heads wherever they go.
