You groaned in annoyance, a pen against your lip as you stared at your textbooks. It was exam season again, and you couldn't remember the last time your skin had touched the sun. The days seemed to blur together into one long stretch of studying, your room becoming a prison cell of notes and highlighters.
You were losing your mind; the words on the page looked like a large mess of nothing. You shifted your headphones, which had been blasting music to keep your thoughts from drifting. But now, even the music was failing to drown out the exhaustion. You'd been staring at the same sentence in silence for the past hour.
You needed an out.
Taking your phone, you placed a call. In two rings, the woman on the other end picked up. You smiled, knowing she definitely wasn't studying either.
"Why are you on your phone?" you asked, a hint of mischief in your voice.
"Why are you a pot," she retorted quickly. Her reply was sharp, and her wit was always a step ahead. Maybe that's why she had never failed despite her erratic studying strategies.
"Wanna get Maccies?" you asked, standing up from your desk and stretching out the stiffness in your muscles.
"Right now?" she asked. You were already getting ready to leave.
"Yeah, I'm coming to pick you up." You knew she wasn't doing anything in particular.
"Alright, I'll see you in 10."
You ended the call and went straight to your wardrobe. The clutter of your study materials was momentarily forgotten as you searched for something to wear. You decided on a sundress, its light fabric and bright colours, a stark contrast to the dreariness of your room. It felt good to wear something that reminded you of freedom and warmth. It was the middle of June, and yet you had to take vitamins since you were vitamin D deficient.
You grabbed your keys and headed out, the cool evening air a refreshing change from the stuffiness inside. The drive to Marcia's house was short, she lived just around the corner, you used to walk to hers all the time before you got your car. Marcia was waiting outside, her black hair shining in the fading sunlight, dressed in baggy jeans and a pink tank top. She looked effortlessly beautiful, her casual style never failing to impress.
"Hey," she said, sliding into the passenger seat and immediately reaching for your mirror to fix her lip gloss. "Long day?"
"You have no idea," you replied, starting the car and pulling away from her house. "I need a maccies sesh. Some normalcy."
Marcia laughed, leaning back in the seat. "You're lucky, I have some tea for you."
Marcia always had tea, she was a social butterfly, migrating from circle to circle. You'd know her for the past four years and yet you only recently got close to her.
You you drove off, the streets were relatively quiet, the orange hue of the setting sun casting a warm glow over everything. The price of picking a college in a small town was having nowhere to go. Still, It felt good to be out, to breathe in the fresh air, and to have some time away from books.
"So," Marcia said, putting away her gloss, "any plans for after exams?
You shrugged. "Honestly? No idea. Maybe sleep for a week straight. Get a massage, and finally open my roster? What about you?"
"Thinking of going on a road trip," she said, her eyes lighting up. "Just hit the road and see where it takes me. No schedules, no stress."
"That sounds pretty," you said, genuinely envious of her free-spirited attitude. "Sometimes when I think of the exam, I just want to drive away and never come back. People will miss me, but the world would still turn."
