lights out⍣ ೋ WHEN THEIR ROMANTIC relationship began to show structure happened months later in sticky july. the willingtons are known for their fourth of july parties. they always decorate the house in everything red, white, and blue. they invited other families and friends, grilled till 9, then mr. willington (or erik) would light the hundreds of dollars they spent on excessive amounts of fireworks.
well, this year, the weather had different plans.
during the party, around 5:30pm, there was a registered thunderstorm warning for all of seattle and surrounding cities, and it would continue all night until three. the dangers consisted of hail, flooded streets, strong winds up to sixty miles per hour, and other things that'd definitely end the party early. so mrs. willington (or eden) made the announcement the fireworks would have to go off early, and the party ended at six.
nora needed to gather her friends so they could watch the show. her group for this party consisted of some school friends like emily and prissy, who were twins and completely inseperable. if nora was truthful, those girls were the brattiest pair of people she had ever met. it was the only reason they could attend the party; they made their parents request an invite from the willingtons. otherwise, theyd be sitting their asses at home.
besides the brats, noras sister evie was obviously attending, though she definitely didnt want to.evies four years older than nora, and four times as stuck up. she was the more spoiled kid, and hated being outdoors more than nora did. fourth of july was evies arch nemesis because it meant sweat, unhealthy foods, and crowds of people she hated. i mean, she had a good point. nora didnt particularly like the hot holiday either, but she enjoyed the social aspect and spending time with her family.
once everyone gathered near the deck for fireworks, the music died down. it was still bright outside but you couldnt do fireworks during a thunderstorm. once the fireworks started, people were hardly in awe. for previous years the deck was silent and people had their heads pointed so high at the sky it seemed possible to fly up there and touch the morsels of colored fire that flew like crazy through the sky.
this year, it was nothing like that. instead of watching, people were too busy finding friends and chatting in the patio chairs to even care about these fireworks. even erik was disappointed with it this year, he usually always loves the firework portion of the night as he was slaving himself out on the grill all day; the fireshow was the mosy relaxin part of the night.most were stressed about the storm to come. it was supposed to be the worst storm seattle had in about a year, and the one last year the willingtons evacuated the city and vacayed back to los angeles. so, what would this storm hold?
fast forward to nine pm. water was leaking under the door of their five hundred thousand dollar house... does that say something? the pitter-patter of the rain sounded like bullets against the windows. no one in the willington house appreciated the interupting of the night, and the lack of sleep theyd get after a long, humid day.
