Vanny white. A blonde ,white, green eyed girl, sat alone on the stairs of her porch. It was around 7 pm, and the sun was setting. The light hit her face which made her freckles show. She had a dark green hoodie on that made her eyes look even more green then they already did. She was sitting and reading (like always) she had loved to read ever since she was little. Every night before bed when she was young she would go to her dad and jump in his lap with as many books as her little arms could hold "let's go!" She would say then he would ask "where?" "To story land!" She would yell then she would place the first book she wanted to read into his hands. She had always loved books because they could take her anywhere from the mermaid cove in neverland to the top of the tallest mountain in Narnia but when she was little books were an adventure but now they were an escape.
She was 15 and turning 16 in June, Vanny didn't care for getting older not like she didn't want to but because she honestly just didn't care. it was the last day of spring break. Vanny was not ready to go back to school. School was not a happy place for her it felt more like a prison, but I guess it did to all the kids, Vanny was not most kids though, and Evreyone knew it. She had a lot of friends when she was in middle school...she was friends with all the kids that are now so popular, and had so many friends, but she wasn't friends with them anymore, she sat alone at lunch, her AirPods were the best friends she had. Sometimes her old friends McKenna, presley, and emma (who were all super popular now, and had hot football players as boyfriends) would come up to her Evrey once and while...They would say "hiiiii!" and pretend to be nice, but it always ended in Vanny saying something normal and them laughing and giggling at her like she had said the weirdest shit in the world. All she wanted is to graduate. One-because she wanted to get out of that prison. And two- so that she could get a job better than all those little B's. She always imagined herself in a beautiful, expensive convertible with the hood down and her hair blowing in the wind, she would pull up to one of their houses and flip them off. She just had two more years, then she could leave that terrible place with those terrible people. The sun finally started to go down fully. Vanny started to see lightning bugs flutter around the field in front of her house. She stopped reading then got up and went into the house. Her mom was in the kitchen cooking and her dad wasn't home yet from work. Her little sister was running around the house playing with a doll. Her little sister's name was Clara. She was so sweet. She was only six years old but she acted a lot older than that. She was Vanny's best friend. Most siblings fight but not Vanny and Clara they never fought.
Vanny walked into the kitchen she looked at her mom. "Hey mom, what r u cookin?" Vanny asked "hey! You were outside for almost an hour!?" Her mom said with a normal expression on her face while she was still looking at the meat she was cooking. "Is dad coming home?" Vanny asked her even though she knew the answer. "No not tonight...he said he had to work late." Her mom said blankly. Vannys's dad had been saying that every night for almost a week, Vanny had started thinking it wasn't just...work. Vanny ran to grab Clara. She crouched down next to her. Clara had stopped running around. She was staring at her doll sitting crisscross applesauce on the rug in front of the door. Vanny looked at her and smiled. "what's up my little ballerina?." (Vanny called Clara little ballerina because of the Nutcracker) Clara looked at her and smiled before saying "nothin much." She looked so much like Vanny with the blonde hair and the green eyes, except Clara's hair was a little more curly like their dads and it was short and it was always in two little pigtails. Vanny picked her up and ran over to the table. She sat Clara on her seat even though Clara was big enough to walk herself over there, but Vanny still picked her up Anyway, they sat at the table and talked for a little bit until their mom set food in front of them. It was tacos just like it was tacos last night and the night before and the night before Vanny knew it was because tacos were easy for her mom to make really fast after work, but still tacos again and again, and again was not what she wanted to eat, but it didn't matter she was still gonna eat it. "Tacos again." Her mom said with a frown on her face. Her mom looked sad and mad and every emotion that was not happy. Vanny didn't know why because Clara and Vanny did nothing. They had cleaned their rooms. They had done their chores and they hadn't talked back to her at all. " do you feel OK?" Vanny said to her mom after a long silence. "I'm fine..." her mom said before getting up and putting her dishes in the sink "Vanny your on dishes and putting Clara to bed. Goodnight." She said as she walked away from the kitchen then she walked up the stairs. Vanny was used to doing this, she stood up and looked at Clara "okay Clara, go get your pjs on and then go to the bathroom and I'll help you brush your teeth." Clara nodded her head and waddled up the stairs. Vanny grabbed the dishes from the table and placed them in the sink. She washed the dishes and wiped the tables down. She was thinking about how she was basically raising Clara, she drove her to school ,she put her to bed, and she cleaned up after her. She hated having so much responsibility while also going to school and desperately trying to graduate. She was so in her thoughts that she didn't notice that she was scrubbing so hard that she had taken some of the paint off of plates. Tears started rolling down her face and stained her green hoodie. She never cried, she HATED crying. She stopped scrubbing and turned the water off. She took a deep breath and wiped her face with the back of her hand then she remembered that even though she couldn't handle the responsibility she still had to try, so she walked straight up the stairs. She walked into Clara's bedroom and quietly opened up the door just a crack and saw Clara sitting on the floor next to her dollhouse, playing "I love you sweetie, goodnight!" Clara said while playing with the mom doll and pretending to tuck the baby doll in. "I love you too mama!" Clara said in a baby voice while taking the baby doll and using her to kiss the mama on the cheek. Vanny smiled and tip toed over to Clara "it's bedtime ballerina" Vanny whispered. Clara looked up at Vanny and whispered back "okay" Vanny picked Clara up and gently placed her on the little pink bed on the side of the room. " Good night Claire bear!" Vanny said while tucking the blanket around Clara. " Good nighty Vanny!" Clara said while drifting off into dreamland. Vanny walked over to the light switch in Clara's room and whispered "I love you" then she switched off the light.
