TW: anxiety attack, use of anxiety meds, mentions of acrophobia (fear of heights) and aerophobia (fear of flying)
Fun fact: I wrote this oneshot in a day, and I wrote half of it on a plane, which is actually where I got the idea for this chapter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"We're going on vacation!" Those are the first words I hear when I enter the living area.
I furrow my eyebrows as I turn to look at Tony. "We're what now?" I ask incredulously.
"Going on vacation," Tony repeats himself as if there's nothing surprising about that statement.
My jaw goes slack with shock. There's nothing surprising about the concept of a vacation. Many people take vacations. A lot of people even take a few different vacations in a year. No, that in itself is not surprising. The surprising thing about this situation is that Tony is referring to the Avengers taking a vacation. I joined the Avengers three years ago, along with Loki, and I can't remember ever once taking a vacation. The only thing we do is train, learn how to wield weapons and tech, and fight villains. Saying that we of all people are going on a vacation is unheard of. Until now.
"I have decided that we will all be traveling to Hawaii!" Tony announces to the group of superheroes. He spreads his arms dramatically as he grins widely.
Once again my mouth falls open. Hawaii! That's on the other side of the world! "Hold on a minute, Stark. Why do you get to choose our vacation spot?" Natasha speaks up from her place in the chair. She's not glaring at him, per say, but she's scrutinizing him intently.
Tony doesn't even seem fazed by her question. In fact, he seems to grow even more cocky. "I get to decide because this vacation was my idea," he smirks,"and I'm the one with the private jet."
"A vacation sounds wonderful!" Thor booms. I glance over to where he's opening a Pop Tart box to see him grinning widely.
"Oh, please, brother," Loki scoffs. "We should be focused on trying to protect New York from any more attacks instead of dwindling away the days by lying on a beach and sipping martinis."
"Oh, come on, Loki," I turn to him. "It'll be fun to get away for a while. Are you incapable of having fun?" I ask, trying to rile him up.
Instead of becoming angry like I thought he would, he smirks at me. "Darling, I'm the very definition of fun."
"Then prove it," I firmly state while slowly walking closer toward Loki.
Before Loki has time to say the quip that is no doubt on the tip of his tongue, a voice cuts into our conversation. "Get a room, guys," Tony loudly proclaims. I jolt slightly as I remember we aren't alone. I glance up and see that everyone has their eyes on us. Some are watching us in confusion and discomfort, while others are smirking at us.
A blush colors my cheeks as I clear my throat. "Right, well, when are we leaving?" I ask Tony, trying to clear the awkward tension.
Something about the way he's looking at me tells me he knows what I'm doing, but he answers me anyway. "In about an hour. Meet me on my jet in forty five minutes. Pack heavy or light. It doesn't matter to me. There's plenty of room either way."
My breath hitches in my throat, and my chest grows tighter with panic the more Tony talks. I know he mentioned something about his jet earlier, but I hadn't actually processed the fact that we'd have to ride in it. "You know what? Maybe Loki is right. We really shouldn't leave New York defenseless," I hurriedly blurt out without trying to sound panicked.
Despite my best efforts to remain calm, a couple of the Avengers study my tense form with curiosity and worry. Loki, especially, has his eyes narrowed as he tries to figure out my the reason for my sudden change in behavior.
