TW: mentions of depression and alcohol abuse (by Thor)
A/N: I wrote this months ago about what I would love to see happen in future films. I got inspiration from a fan made comic by Keiid.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"Hey, Loki, let's take a break," Mobius suggests as they finish the last of their paperwork.
Loki grabs his jacket off the back of his chair and follows Mobius. "Where are we going, Mobius?" he questions, eyebrows rising in confusion.
"So, here's the thing," Mobius begins. "You've been working very hard lately, so I convinced Ravonna to let you have a break."
"Sort of like a holiday?" Loki wonders, even more confused than before.
"Yeah, Loki, sort of like a holiday," Mobius agrees. "Except for this vacation, you can choose any place you want in any time period you want."
"You're joking, right? This is just a cruel elaborate trick to give me hope and then tear it away, isn't it?" Loki accuses, his voice turning harsh.
"Loki, you know me better than that. You know I would never hurt you on purpose," Mobius informs him.
"You hurt me when we first met," Loki reminds him.
"I didn't know you back then," Mobius defends.
"You literally studied every moment of my life," Loki points out.
"That's not the same thing. Look, can we please just get back to discussing the matter at hand? Do you have any idea where and when you would like to go?" Mobius asks, trying to keep the ever growing frustration out of his voice.
Loki stares at the ground like it's the most interesting thing he's ever seen throughout his many years of living before he mumbles something inaudible. "What was that, Loki?" Mobius asks, leaning closer toward him.
Loki sighs before repeating himself, this time loud enough to be heard. "I said I would like to visit Thor. After Thanos is already killed, obviously."
"Alright," Mobius nods. He quickly types coordinates into his Tempad before handing it over to Loki. Loki takes the Tempad, his mouth agape. "Wow, you really thought I was tricking you, didn't you?"
"Well, I..." Loki begins.
"It's fine, Loki. My Tempad will take you directly to Thor a few years after Thanos is defeated," Mobius explains.
"Thank you, Mobius." Loki nods his gratitude, opens the time door, and steps through.
He emerges through the time door and finds himself standing in a open field. Blades of bright green grass bend under the weight of his footsteps. He squints his eyes so he can see past the blazing sun. He can just make out a figure sitting at the edge of a cliff. Loki smiles his first real smile in a long time as he makes his way over to the distant figure.
As Loki approaches the figure, he realizes that tears are dripping down the man's face. His eyes are red and puffy, his cheeks are sunken in, not a glimmer of joy is reflected on his face, and every few seconds he pauses to take a swig of beer. Loki takes a deep breath to prepare himself before whispering, "Thor?"
"Maybe Korg's right. Maybe I should stop drinking. Things would certainly be a lot easier if I didn't have to deal with seeing illusions of my dead brother every day," Thor mutters to himself. He sighs before chucking the beer bottle behind his back. If Loki's reflexes were any slower, he would have gotten his face cut open by glass.
"Careful, you oaf! You nearly hit me!" he shouts in indignation.
A broken chuckle escapes Thor's lips. "No, I didn't. Do you know why I didn't? I didn't almost hit you because you're not real. You're a figment of my imagination that keeps coming back to haunt me!" At this point, Thor is full on yelling and advancing toward Loki rather quickly. "You're an illusion created by drunken mind meant to torture me again and again! Why must you keep coming back? Why must you..." Thor trails off, a look of horror overcoming his face when his finger makes contact with Loki's chest. "That's not... That's not possible. You d-d-died. You're dead," Thor stutters.
"Well, that is a very long story, but as you can see, I'm clearly not dead," Loki states the obvious.
"You mean you faked your death again," Thor declares.
"What? No, I didn't..."
"How many times are you going to make me mourn you?! How many times am I going to be forced to watch you die right in front of me?!" Thor screams in rage and starts pounding on Loki's chest. Loki simply stands still and allows the abuse. He knows that Thor has to let all of his emotions out before he'll even think about listening to what he has to say. "When will it be enough, Loki?! When I no longer believe you to be dead and stop mourning you every time you supposedly die?!" Thor takes a shuddering breath and slightly calms down before continuing in a broken-hearted whisper. "I heard your neck snap and watched your lifeless body fall to the ground."
"Like I said, it's a long story, but I can assure you that I didn't fake my death. Your Loki really did die," Loki carefully begins to explain.
"So what you're saying is that you're not really my brother?" Thor asks with skepticism.
"No, I'm still you're brother. It's just that I'm from the year 2012. I escaped with the Tesseract after your friends botched up their mission when they went back in time," Loki clarifies the situation. Thor's expression is unreadable, and Loki begins to think he said the wrong thing.
All of a sudden, warm arms wrap themselves around Loki's waist and pull him into an embrace. "That's good enough for me," Thor murmurs in Loki's ear. "It's good to have you back, brother. Oh, how I've missed you."
"I know this might come as a surprise, but I've missed you too, Thor," Loki admits, leaning deeper into the hug.
Thor laughs once again, though this time, his laugh is full of happiness and pure joy. "For once, I believe you."
Just then, the sun that had been hidden since their conversation began, emerged from the cover of the clouds. The bright rays of sunlight shines down directly on the patch of grass on which Thor and Loki are standing. "Look brother," Loki utters. "The sun is shining on us again."
