Chapter Six
[ One Glass of Peppermint Later ]

The group of three had been forced to wait for longer than Crystal had been willing to, seeing every passing second as lost time in solving the mystery. The fact that they came back with Envy holding a scolding cup of peppermint tea that had Crystal covering her nose in disgust.

"Feeling better are we?"

Envy nodded vigorously, her face flushed red from the thick clouds of steam wafting across her face. She gave an immediate thumbs up to Edwin who exhaled a fake sigh of exasperation but managed to smile.

The group made their way to the residence of Becky Aspen's parents home, where the plan was for the detectives to pose as police officers. Whilst they questioned the mother and father over the young girl's disappearance, Crystal was to try and read their minds to help solidify an image of the place where Becky had been taken.

Sat atop of the parents' parked vehicle, Nicolas and Envy watched the interaction from the world between reality and the afterlife.

"This doesn't seem like Edwin's speed," Nicolas thought aloud, his legs swinging impatiently against the side of the vehicle. "I mean, where's the payment?"

Envy hummed, the simple sound replacing a verbal agreement.

"That girl's bad news."

"You're just saying that because she's living."

"Exactly. Don't lie to me and say you like having her around," Nicolas remarked, nudging the demon with an increasing smirk. His prior worry for Charles and Edwin's payment had diminished and his typical cheeky grin returned, the one that came in the wake of irritatingly persistent teasing.

"Nicolas, don't. I can't handle that right now."

His maturity return seconds after, and he straightened up. His smile tumbled into a frown as he glanced at the demon girl, finding her eyes to be admiring the horizon.

"After what that group did to you, I can imagine you'll never trust humans again. You don't have to use my "crush", as you say, to justify your hate," Envy explained, glancing at the boy who unenthusiastically obliged and shut his mouth. Managing to force Nicolas to keep his mouth shut was a victory in itself, something Envy would always take pride in.

Useless to the current mission, the pair sat in the distance and merely observed.

The town itself was a quiet, almost invisible place that most wouldn't give a second thought to. But as the silence persisted, Envy felt the reoccurring gut feeling that something about it was right. She had experienced the odd sensation from the moment the arrived via the ferry, that something hellish was laying beneath what they could see.
