Pov: Ehaan

"Collen, take this and bring me the next project's work, please," I said again in annoyance.
"Looks like someone's pissed. My dearest friend, you're the only one I have, you know?" said Hasan. My morning was far from ideal. Not a glimpse of Ayat, and now this problem that could walk and talk. "Hasan bhai, could you do me a favour?" I asked with a forced smile.

"Sure, whatever my little brother asks for." He came over to my table. "Could you kindly exit from my office," I said, hoping he'd take the hint. He laughed, kicked off his shoe, and laid down on the sofa with an enraging blank expression. How much worse could this get? Our relationship was strained; we were so-called friends.

An hour later, my office door swung open, nearly giving me a heart attack. Ayat glided in, taking in her surroundings, her hands clutching a yellow bag. "I let her inside," Collen whispered in my ear. "Hey, morning!" Ayat greeted me with a smile, taking a seat and motioning for me to sit as well. I stood there, mouth open, unable to move. "How have you been?" Why is she so cheerful? What's with that smile? How many times can she steal my heart?

"Ehaan?" "Sir?" They both called out, snapping me back to reality.

I flinched, grounding myself. "What brings you here?" I asked Ayat, struggling to accept her presence in my office. "Can we talk in private, please?" Did she just ask that? "Collen? Collen?" I called, doubting my senses. "Sir, I will take my leave, excuse me." He shouted as he exited, leaving me alone in heaven.

"So I-" Ayat began, but was promptly interrupted. "Now who is this young lady?" Hasan spoke, his smile anything but charming. His presence, always an unwanted reminder.

"Stay out of this, Hasan," I said, my voice icy. I hoped he'd vanish, but he persisted. "Why would I? I hardly know this lovely lady. Let me introduce myself. So hey, are you single?" I couldn't stand his words or his lewd gaze. I grabbed Ayat's hand and stormed out of the office.

We ended up in the meeting room, "You are still holding on to me" said Ayat. I finally realized I was still holding her hand. I sighed and let go. "I'm sorry for what happened back there," I said, pulling a chair out for her. "It's fine, but who is that, if you don't mind me asking?" she said, setting the yellow bag on the table and looking into my eyes.

"Ah th-tha-that was Ha-Hasan, my old school friend. Please don't mind his words." Her piercing curiosity made me stutter. Look away, Ayat. She nodded. "So what brings you here?" I asked, praying for no more interruptions.

"I am here to say sorry. I shouldn't have behaved the way I did. I am very grateful for your help. I made some brownies for you. Hope you like them," she said, handing me the bag. Though I was lost in her words, brownies and sorry were the only ones I heard.

"Ehaan? You don't like brownies?" she asked, her face falling.

"No, no, it's fine. No need to apologize, and I love brownies. I would die for brownies," I said quickly, trying to revive her smile. She brightened. "I made some for Zara too. Don't forget to give them to her."

"Surely. Can I pick you up and drop you off from now on?" I asked, hoping she'd say yes and brighten my days. "Yeah, sure, but from the hospital to your home." I blushed, wishing the air conditioner would stick to me and cool my burning face. "Why though?" I asked.

"I was assigned to take care of Zara at home. It's a better environment than the hospital." I nodded, remembering how sick Zara had looked yesterday. "Sure, I would, my lady. May I drop you off now?" I asked, elated by her presence. "No, it's fine. I came with a colleague, and you have a guest, right? So see you at night. Bye." Saying I was sad was an understatement; I was devastated.

"Enjoy the brownies," she said, opening the door. "Byee!!" I shouted from inside the meeting room. "At least I'll see her tonight." Talking to myself, I returned to my office.

"What you got there?" Hasan snatched the bag from my hands.

"Brownies," he said, eyes gleaming.

"Leave that bag," I yelled, but he ignored me.

"Is it from that lad-" I cut him off.

"One more word about her and you will be six feet under. This is mine." I grabbed his collar, reclaiming what was mine. "And get out of my office at once." I couldn't handle any more stress today, so I left for home.
