Chapter 2

You wake up to someone gently shaking you by the shoulders. "Are you alright?" a young voice asks.

You slowly peel your eyes open to be greeted by a kid with big brown eyes, spiky black hair, and a green outfit on. You mutter, "yes," and get up to look around. You're in a lush forest, right next to a lake, and you notice the kid is holding a fishing rod and looking at you with concern.

"That's good! My name's Gon, what about you?"

"Uhhh, Y/n," you say skeptically.

"Y/n is such a beautiful name, nice to meet you!"

"T-Thank you. Could you possibly tell me where I am?"

"Whale island! But why wouldn't you know that? You were walking with the group of girls that was touring the island earlier. Did you get lost?"

"No- nononono, I just forgot the name of the island after finishing the tour, so I tried looking for someone to ask." you lie.

"But then why were you passed out?" geez this kid asks a lot of questions.

"I uh- um," then you see the trees above you, "hit my head on a branch by accident!" you say in an embarrassed tone, and rub your neck.

"Well, do you need any help?"

"N- well actually, I don't know how to get out of the forest." you admit.

"It's okay! I'll take you back to my house, and you can tell me about yourself." Gon excitedly exclaims.

"Ok sure, I don't have anything else to do." You finally stand up, and notice your backpack was considerably heavier. You decided you would check it later, and made a mental note.

Gon and you start to walk through the forest together, and as you reach the edge, you notice a little house on top of the hill, overlooking the ocean. The view was oddly familiar, but you couldn't tell why, so you just shook it off and continued walking.

"Mito-san! This is my friend Y/n I'm going to take her to my room, okay?"

"Hello Y/n, it's nice to meet you, Gon doesn't have many friends so I'm happy he found one. Please, call me Aunt Mito."

"Thank you Aunt Mito, Gon is really wonderful, I don't see why he wouldn't have many friends." you say, and Aunt Mito chuckles.

"Well Whale Island doesn't have many kids on it, and most people here don't even come from here. Most are just tourists or fishermen stopping off here." Gon explains, he smiles and grabs your wrist to take you to his room.

While walking to Gon's room, you take your backpack off and check inside of it. Your homework was no longer inside it, sadly, a project that took you two months was gone. You find a bag of weird looking money, a change of clothes (thank goodness it had another mask in it), another pair of contacts, a couple more daggers, and a strange looking coin. The coin had a spiderweb on one side, and a spider like the one on your back, on the other side.

As you plop down on the floor, Gon starts asking you questions about yourself. Things like:

"How old are you? Where are you from?" You answered the questions with ease, and you guys slowly got to know more about each other. The sun started dipping into the ocean, and it was beautiful. You end up staring at it for 5 minutes until you finally shake yourself out of the trance.

"Well I guess I should be going now." you mumble through a yawn.

"Where are you staying?"

It then hit you, you didn't have a place to stay. "Probably in the forest." You had slept in the forest many times, right after your parents death, so it was nothing new to you.

"You should stay with me instead!"

"Really? Thanks! So, what should we do now?"

"I'm going to try to catch 'the master of the lake,' when you appeared, I was doing just that."

"The master of the lake?"

"It's the largest and hardest fish to catch," Gon waits a second before continuing, "and I need to catch it before I can take the hunter exam. Mito-san says if I catch it she'll let me take it."

"The hunter exam..?"

"Wow, you really don't know anything! Basically, you have to take the hunter exam to become a hunter. I want to become a hunter because I want to learn more about my dad. He went to become a hunter, leaving me with Mito-san when I was a baby. It's super cool that he left his own son to become a hunter!"

"Well I could help you catch the master of the lake." you offer.

"No! No, it would be really boring, Y/n, you should explore the island, and I'll tell you if I catch it."

"Okay... Then I guess I'll ask Aunt Mito if she wants me to help her with anything to keep busy." you say.

About a week later, Gon barges into your room and says triumphantly, "I CAUGHT IT!"

"Wait, really?! Good job! We can take the hunter exam now. And then once we get our hunters license, we can look for your dad." You congratulate Gon.

"Thanks Y/n. Well we should be leaving tomorrow, so get ready."

"Okay."

Before you guys go to board the ship, you decide to change into the other outfit you had. You just realized that you hadn't worn it yet. The outfit was in your style, it consisted of a black top, with a weird hole in the back, framing the spider tattoo you had. You didn't want anyone giving you weird looks because you have a tattoo at 14. You also didn't want anyone seeing your scars, so you decided to wear a black undershirt to cover it. The outfit also had mesh patterned tights, and over it you put on the skirt. The skirt was a lot like your school uniform one, plaided, except it had 2 areas where you could store daggers, underneath, and hidden in the folds of the skirt. No new shoes were provided so you just put on your knee-high boots. The mask provided was another black mask, but at least you could alternate, so it wouldn't be too unhygienic. The outfit made you look sort of like an assassin.

You debate for some time if you want to put on the new contacts, and decide to do so. Once you take them out you notice that strangely, nothing was too blurry, but you assume it was just because you weren't trying to look at anything. The new contacts seemed exactly the same, but at least you got momentarily relief from wearing the contacts for so long.

At the dock, you turn to Aunt Mito.

"Thank you Aunt Mito, for everything in this past month." you thank her.

"It's nothing Y/n frankly, it was nice having a daughter." she smiles.

You and Gon board the boat, and Gon yells out to Aunt Mito, "When we come back, we're going to be Hunters!"
