The next morning he and I drove to Matteo's granny (Amanda) and I was a bit nervous as well.
Felisa advised me to wear a Christian veil in addition to the cross necklace I was gifted. She told me that Amanda is devotedly catholic and also raised her son, Martín, accordingly. Matteo adjusted my veil and gave me a forehead kiss. Our eyes met for a split second and a little spark was evoked in his.
"Don't you know what forehead kisses mean, Mat?"
He beamed at hearing this nickname coming out of my mouth.
"I am very aware of it, that's why I do it."We hiked through the little bewildered garden, full of lilies and a little pond with fish. She opened the back door and immediately went for a deep hug, kissing my cheeks. A long bobby pin held her grey, fluffy hair in a bun. "Come inside, I prepared Pan de Mallorca and some fennel tea."
She trudged into the typical grandma's kitchen. Old dilapidated, porcelain collection, old dolls, and patterned tiles. Amanda invited me into the kitchen to take a look and I helped her with preparing the dish.
"Do you know how to do Pan de Mallorca, Lara?"
I shook my head politely, powdering the sweet bread.
"I'm Brasileira, Nílopolis. I sadly don't.""Ohhh, Teo chose a Brazilian woman."
She seemed proud and handed me a little handmade book with yellowed pages. She enclosed my hands with hers."These are all of my recipes, I want you to keep them and make these for your children and grandchildren with Teo one day."
Children. With Matteo.
"Thank you so much...You're sure you don't need it?"
"Azucenita, I know all of my recipes by heart."Yes, the Díaz family has a great love for calling me nicknames I didn't understand at first. She carried the plates into the living room and I aided her in doing so.
Matteo sat on the couch with a white cat on his lap, stroking it prudently. I took place next to him and befriended myself with the cat called Magnolia, as I later found out.
"Did you propose yet?" Amanda asked Matteo, sipping on her fennel tea.
"We are not a couple yet, Abuelita." She nearly let the cup fall in shock."We're dating.", I added trying to not give her a heart attack. My assurance seemed to relax her and she leaned back into the armchair again.
An hour later, Matteo decided to surf a bit for the upcoming competition. Amanda and I were in the garden, watering the plants. The garden was covered mostly in lillies, mostly in purple and pink.
"Are lillies your favorite flowers?"
"Yes, in Spanish they are called Azucenas."
Azucenita. She cut one lily and put it in my hair.
"Are you sure that you and Matteo are just dating?"
"Yes, we only know each other for three or four months. Besides, I don't think Matteo nor I love each other yet to commit."
